OK I couldn't resist. I had to jump on the bandwagon and get a console for myself.

I love the concept/idea but if they build in a SDK, I am wondering if it will fail like XNA has "failed" or if they will actually do what's needed to stimulate new waves of game developers is a built in series of engines/templates for various types of games. A dream list to do most games would be 2d and 3d versions of:
RTS
FPS
RPG
Turn Based Strategy(wargames)
With full customization to do what you want mechanics wise, built in db, networking, patching modules to drop in your project

I think I will join this bandwagon as well (after next this month's pay cheque anyway)
It looks like a great idea and could lead to some really cool games being ported or created.
Imagine an updated BF42 on a console that was available for $99
I know you would all be there...

Did you look at the figures? (sorry I',m an accountant)
They wanted just shy of $1 million & have pledges of almost $4 million. I think that maybe this is going to take off & be a big hit. Certainly be good to give the current console makers a bit of competition on a lower budget machine.
My only worry is if the current software development companies disappear because they cannot recoup the cost of development for the big name games.

That's an interesting point Gav. The one "dream' I've always had was to get into professional game design. There's a huge barrier to entry to make (AAA) games like Wow, BF, etc. It could hurt big companies but only if they make the design effort about 1% of what it is now. For example, WoW took and initial $75 million, 100+ people, and 4-5 years to make if memory serves. I think it would be cool to see many smaller companies that farm out the art development but are able to make AAA games in a fraction of the time and cost and labor. Kind-of back to a cottage industry. But then you have potential support issues I think.
Could be an exciting age comming but only if they are able to produce game engines with open source code and deliver more than just a set of libraries/binaries/framework. From the previous research over the years on the cost of AAA game making and the engines for sale can be $100k on up to license just for a single game. That's a drop in the bucket for large companies since salaries are your overwhelming expense. So I'd like to see AAA engines in it, open source. If that happens then watch out, I think a bunch of cool new ideas will be able to be manifested into new and exciting games.

6 month ago they were saying great things about this former baseball player's video game company:
