As some of you know, I've been suffering from a high and erratic ping for a while now. It's so bad sometimes I have to quit BF42. I've already tried:
-- upgrading my modem
-- upgrading my router
-- replacing my cables
-- bypassing the router
-- running a thorough set of anti-virus/malware programs.
Nothing has worked. So Monday I called my cable provider (Cox) and asked them to come out to check my setup. I mentioned to them that the problems seem to have gotten worse after they installed my cable TV (we switched from satellite to cable) a month ago.
The guy came out last night out and discovered:
-- the tech who installed the TV didn't close up the outside box tightly, so there was water damage to my cables
-- the same tech installed a new splitter on top of an existing one, and ran more cable than needed; and (this is the kicker)
-- mice had chewed through half of the cable that ran to my computer
So he put new cables in outside, simplified and shortened my cable lines in the house and replaced the chewed cable section. He checked my connections and saw a vast improvement. I played a bit last night and saw no fluctuations, but as I've learned I'm not going to claim victory yet until I seee the performance over several days. I'm also smearing my garage cable with Vaseline to fend off the wee beasties.
I was worried he'd find nothing, and the mystery would continue.
So watch out JiF, Stinky may become a low-ping theat to you all!

Re: Stinky's Saga Continues - Persistence Pays Off
Great story there Stinky!
I tend to keep my bird table stocked all the time as it is also frequented by mice. I also have it sited at the far end of my garden next to the neighbours fence. That way they are more likely to go & chew all his stuff & stay away from mine.
Fingers crossed though that you have all your problems sorted & get some smooth gaming in.
