Losing bandwidth

Post by [JiF]War Trophy »

I'm losing major bandwidth somewhere! I have cable internet and my pc is connected to a modem via a USB cable. I also have an ethernet cable running from the modem to a wireless router, to which 3 other laptops can connect.
From various speed tests, I should have a download speed of 2100 kbps, an upload speed of 500kbps, and a ping rate of 120ms from Chicago.
However, all of a sudden I'm losing up to 90% of my bandwidth on my pc, while the laptops on the wireless network have normal connectivity. Even when these laptops are turned off, I still lose bandwidth on my pc.
But if I pull the ethernet cable out of the wireless router, my bandwidth returns to normal.
The moment I reconnect the router, I lose bandwidth again, even if the laptops are turned off.
Could there be something wrong with the ethernet cable (which runs under a carpet which is well walked upon) or a problem with the router, or even my own USB cable?
As far as I know a router wouldn't eat bandwidth if there are no computers connected to it. But what do I know lol!!

Can anyone shed any light on possible causes? It's driving me nuts!

Instead of using the USB cable can you use an ethernet cable to your computer? I seem to remember hearing that some modems can have trouble using both the USB and ethernet connection at the same time. I've never done it myself so can't really say for sure, but it should be easy to try. You could also call your ISP and they can run tests on your modem.
