100 toy soldiers

Post by [JiF]War Trophy »

When I was a young boy I used to read a lot of comics. Mostly war ones like Battle Action and Battlefield, but also a lot of DC's stuff like Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, The Flash etc and of course I had a subscription to some British classics, like Beano, Dandy, Whizzer And Chips etc.
Now I'm talking about 30 years ago, and in those days, on the back cover of a lot of these comics was always an advertisement for a box set of 100 toy soldiers.
Comic after comic, day after day, week after week, month after month and year after year I would dream of owning one of these box sets, I used to pretend I owned this boxset and I'd play out fantasy battles with them in my imagination.
But sadly, I knew I'd never be able to own this boxset in reality, because I lived in Namibia at that time, and the offer was not open to anyone outside the USA  ;(
And then finally, one day almost 30 years later, when fully grown up into an adult, I bought a game called Battlefield 1942 Anthology, and so finally had my boxset of toy soldiers to play with :viva:

Do any of you older guys remember this advertisement that always featured on the rear cover of these comics?
And does anyone know if it still exists to this day?

I have some little soldiers somewhere, even though i'm 12. I havent played with for some years. I remember them though: The dark green was USA, the light green was Japanese, the grey was German and the yellow was England.
I wanted to buy them to a 5 year old in my family that had a birthday, but they dont sell them anymore at the toy stores. :(

I still have a whole bunch of toy soldiers and a bunch of tanks. I had two armies of tanks and trucks. One was US and the other was German. My favorite was always the Tiger tank.
These toys were in HO (1/87) scale and I would use these with my train stuff. Most of the tanks and trucks were made by ROCO and was imported from Germany. In fact they are still made today.
Some of the tanks I have are 40 years old. There are tons of this stuff on Ebay.
WOW what memmories!
Thanks War.

OI used to collect toy soldiers and ive seen many sets like that. I also collect comic books to sell and my dad gave me "The Green Lantern Corps." Issue #1 the other day and on the back of it is that exact same add. I looked it over and it's exactly the same. Btw Cesar, I believe my little bro has somethin like that. It came in a big plastic barrel, each team had a flag and there were sections in the bucket for each team. Right?

Yeah, thats it! That was one of my favourite things to do when i was younger. I used to build them up snipers over the TV and mostly the other units on the floor and sometimes i put some units under a dark place so that they could ambush the other side.
And it was so fun! And now i've found a more of adult version of that. Battlefield!! :viva: :pada: :shoot: :medit:

i had some plastic soldiers too, but the best thing was when my dad gave me his toys. when he was aroubnd 10 he spend allot of money on steel tanks and trucks. so his toys are now about 40 years old but still look like new he even has the boxes they came with!!!!
i guess some of them are worth allot of money know

Thats amazing! A number 1 issue! What was the date of that comic?
The year on the picture I posted above was 1976.

Whoaa! The starting bid on that ebay soldier set is $15!
In the ad I posted above, the selling price was $1.75! That was back in '76 though.
Might be worth the money though ,to pass onto my kids so they can also chew the rifles

I always wanted those and remember those ads very well.
We used to get our toy soldiers at a store called T G & Y or Piggly Wiggly.
Anyone remember the the advertisement in those comic books to sell a paper called Grit?
