Good Books worth reading

Post by [JiF]Sgt Shellshocked »

I have just read a great book about D-Day and the battle for Normandy. The book is by Antony Beevor and is called D-Day The Battle for Normandy. It's such a great read very exciting stuff and very difficult to put down once you start reading it. If anyone has any other good book recommendations please post them in the forums. :)

Here is a link to the Antony Beevor website , he has written some other WW2 books but I haven't read the others yet :

I read Old Encyclopedias (pre'60) and History books.
My wife thinks reading Encyclopedias is very strange.
We had a big fight one time when she threw out my old Brittanicas.

I've read a few of those I believe and here's on of my favorite books, "The Bedford Boys", because it's about a group of men form my home town lynchburg VA, although I've since moved. This is the authors website along with some other books: http://www.alexkershaw.com/
Enjoy

If you want to discover more about WWII then I heartily recommend this book - Absolute War Be warned it's no light read!
Its a comprehensive account of the 'other' WWII the Eastern front between Germany and Russia, it describes the early negotiations between the commies and Nazis to carve up eastern europe, how Hitler fooled Stalin and was able to launch a surprise attack and then goes on to recount the major offensives and battles. It is absolutely amazing and has lots of information from old soviet archives released only a few years back. The numbers involved are mind blowing, 300,000 troops captured in two days, armies that were up to 2 million strong .

Then if that has whetted your appetite to know more about the USSR then read this book. Gulag
On a similar scale to the last one it tells the tale of the soviet prison camps and the unbelievable haredships that the inmates suffered, often for nothing. There is a famous story about some nutty communist who sent an entire football team to the labour camps because they lost a match and 'embarrassed' russia

Finally just to lighten the mood how about this: The Shankill Butchers
the true story of a Loyalist Murder gang in Northern Ireland who tortured and killed people because of their religion/background in the 70s and 80s
this is some shocking stuff!

I have recommended these here before...

Sven Hassel is great (although perhaps a fraud) he writes well and describes some very accurate accounts.

I've read Beevor's Berlin and Stalingrad books. I read the former after reading the latter and they're both remarkable (and detailed) accounts that reveal levels of privation (particularly Stalingrad where things were pretty hopeless for both sides) you simple can't relate to.

The most infuriating aspect of Stalingrad was the leadership that just kept sending hundreds of thousands of young men to their doom. If you'll remember Patton's utterance "such a waste of infantry" in the movie you'll find yourself repeating that throughout the book.

Anyway both excellent.

If you're into the Clancy/techno-thriller genre I just finished Frederick Forysthe's "The Avenger" and HIGHLY recommend that one. He's my favorite in that category and while he's got a bunch of gems that one is really outstanding.

The Pillars of the Earth. Followed by it's sequel: World Without End by Ken Follett. Two of the greatest books I've ever had the priviledge of reading.

Bare? (pronounced bare)
Bear? (pronounced bare)
Beer? (thank you, mate)

I was in Italy and got a funny lecture from an Italian restaurant owner on the English pronunciation of bare, bear, pier, pare, pear, etc. It was all in good fun.

Tissueman gave me a good idea. now everytime i will not be sure about the spelling i will replace the word by BEER or maybe just replace all the verbs by BEER

Not WWII related, but it's got war in it. That counts, right?

Dune. All of them. Start from the prequels Brian Herbert wrote, because he really captures the spirit of his father in his writing. I was hesitant at first to read them, but they sucked me in fast. I had to know what happened next. And how he finishes the serious?! WOW! But I shant spoil it :x

I BEERED some of the Dune books when I was younger and have always meant to go back to them,

for those of you who like Sci-Fi check out anything by Alastair Reynolds - his books are truely amazing in scope and vision. They make you wish that it was true and that you lived there
