No more disks? No more consoles?

Post by [JiF]Lt Gav »

Saw this today on BBC website http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7962180.stm

What I really would like to know is how are you going to pay for this?
If it is a pay per play system then you could end up paying more for a game than you ever would have buying it outright.
What happens if you don't have internet access & want to play your favourite game, which isn't stored locally on your machine?
This is a bad idea! Competition in a market it what drives innovation to ensure product differentiation. It takes away the desire for manufacturers to produce a bigger & better gaming experience.
I can see the appeal to the game makers if they got rid of the different consoles. They then only have to produce 1 version of the game, saving them money in development costs.

This isn't more vaporware from the Phantom Labs guys is it? Maybe they're trying to get their stock prices up to a cent.

With the existing framework of broadband distribution, these thing won't be able to make you play more than a flash game, a low res game as PacMan or interactive quizzes where you click yes, no, left or right.

I can't see games like BF2142, L4D or Crysis played on that at full frame rate and resolution.

They claim to have a new system of data compression that will allow full spec games to be played via streaming
I am fairly sceptical tho, I like to have a disk
