WWII Memorabilia

Post by [JiF][AARP]Tissueman »

I was going through some of my stuff and found a letter my dad sent my grandfather during WWII. He didn't write the letter, it is a 'form letter' prepared by someone serving on the USS Pasadena to send to family and friends. It describes sailing into Tokyo harbor for the surrender.

My father was a Seaman Second Class serving on the Pasadena. His father was a Lt Commander serving on the USS Briarius. I thought some of the WWII buffs would like to see this bit of history.

Somewhat ironically, I was in Thailand on August 15th 1973 when we ended combat operations in SEA (we were still bombing Cambodia at the time). I think he had more to celebrate.

Very Cool!

I have a lot of stuff like this as my father was a US Marine during WWII.
He enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor (age 20) and saw action with the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and Cape Gloucester.
I will never forget the stories he told me.
He passed on quite a few years ago, another member of the "greatest generation" departed.

As a result, I have been a WWII history buff all my life. Probably explains my interest in BF1942 too!

Anyone else have family involved in WWII?

None that I am aware of, but for some reason I have been into WWII history my whole life. There's just something about it that intrests me. My favorite is Band of Brothers, the book, and movie. Both are amazing. Really enjoyed that letter Tissue, thanks for posting it.

That is very cool. I know that my grandfather on my dad's side was in WWII, but I never heard anything about it. He had a few heart attacks and a massive stroke before I was old enough to ask any questions... and by that point he wasn't really "there" anymore. :(
And my grandmother on that side has Alzheimer's now and can't remember anything anyway.

My grandfather on my mom's side was in the Army Corps of Engineers... so he must have been in WWII, but I don't know anything about that either. He died before I was born. My grandmother would probably know, but I've never asked her. My step-grandfather was definitely in WWII as an Army doctor, but again... no stories there.

Both of my parents were born in '51, so they don't really know either.

Man, I need to get crackin' on asking them about it... so sad to lose so much family history.

You've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

My Grandfather on my mother's side fought in Burma against the Japanese. He was in The Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. They became part of an Indian Division with a multi national force of Indians & Gurkhas. My Grandfather always said the Gurkhas from Nepal were the most fearsome fighters he was with.

How did I miss this!?

This is awesome! Thanks Tissue.

I have no relatives that have served in any wars (Both my grandparents were too young for draft age and my dad was too young for draft age in the Vietnam War) so I unfortunately never actually spent the time with someone who has served and spoke to them about their experiences.
