Well, if you are looking for an automotive unit, it's pretty good. The cheap off brand units are maybe $10 cheaper. You get a name brand, and you can install optional voices, like Mr. T ;) "TURN LEFT NOW SUCKA!"

Would it be too early to pick this up as a Christmas gift or would you expect as good of a price closer to that time?

We bought a TomTom One a few months ago. I love it, but it's a European product and thus some of the maps of our area are quite old. I've read a number of things online about the maps and POI's not being as accurate as many of the other competing US products, but TomTom has said they are working on getting the maps updated. I almost brought ours back and exchanged it, but I really like how easy it is to use. I don't think the others are quite as easy. If you don't mind waiting for TomTom to be integrated into the US more, it's a fine Navigation System. It's helped me many many times. :) We paid like $300 bucks for ours...would have loved this price!!

This price makes me want to finally buy a GPS. I'm tired of printing out directions on paper, besides mapquest sucks anyway.

You'll find that like any tool, a GPS has it limitations also. It doesn't replace common sense. I really like mine, but I still carry a map on trips. Sometimes I don't want to go the way it tells me too. Just like when I use mapquest.
