Re: Farting
Definately related to IE only. I ran a test at work today. Using my regular Firefox I had no extraneous noise. So then I fired up the old IE v8 & it came to pass that in that place the computer did begin to fart verily
Could not tie it down to the shoutbox though. That kept refreshing with no sound. Tomorrows experiment will be to sit at desk with laptop & PC. Do a post on the PC & see if the laptop farts.
You can tell I've got an exciting day lined up! I'll sit there with my charity Pink cupcakes working hard in the name of science (oh & sanity I think)

Re: Farting
Try holding a match to the screen
When I was a kid I had an uncle who would do the old "Flaming Fart" trick. When confronted by my mother he would claim he was conducting an experiment. Pretending the whole affair had a scientific purpose he would feign his best mad German scientist accent (as in "Mein Führer! I can valk!") and yell "prepare to ignite za afterburners" before every experiment. Despite his use of "scientific method" with his methane experiments (Note: this was long before green house gasses became vogue) he forgot that cotton underwear is also flammable. Alas he had to add "squeal like a girl" to the "stop, drop and roll" protocol - probably his only real contribution to science. (It is also interesting to note that he is the only one of eleven brothers who never fathered a child.)
He only stayed with us for a couple of weeks but somehow his presence made the house seem warmer.

Re: Farting
When a new message is posted in the shoutbox it's more of a clicking sound then a fart. I think I know what sound you are talking about though, I've heard it too. However I'm not always on the jif site when I hear it. Wonder what it is.

Re: Farting
So I'm sat here with 2 machines logged on both using IE 8 & one just farted, but the other didn't!
So no clearer on the why there then.

Re: Farting
As long as your computer doesn't accompany the farting sound with this comment "Silly Englishman, I fart in your general direction !", I think you're OK.
Re: Farting
Here it more like a burp-sound. Maybe my computer got some soda and your got beans:)

I used to have an annoying programme which you could set running in the background on a machine & every now & then it would produce a fart.[JiF]zougathefist wrote:smells like a virus
Used to sneak in to offices at lunchtime & plant it on a machine. The other people in the office used to love it, but the user always got worried. My technical skills at stopping the 'problem' used to make worried people very greatful.
