Ordered a New Toy
I ordered a Nokia 770 the other day.
Spose to be here on the 5th. They had/have them at Buy.com for $139.

Interesting.. It looks pretty cool.
Although, it looks like they use their own OS which means little 3rd-party software.

Maemo is an open development platform for applications and technology innovation for handheld devices. It was developed by Nokia as part of its development process for the Nokia Internet Tablets devices and subsequently opensourced and offered to the community. It brings to developers an easy to use development environment and a new optimized end user interface customized for handheld screen size and usage.
Maemo platform is composed of mainstream Linux and open source software widely deployed in the most popular Linux distributions. At its core is Hildon Application framework, which is based on GNOME technology. GNOME provides an intuitive and attractive PC desktop for end-users based on Linux, and a powerful framework for building applications that integrate into the rest of the PC desktop. Maemo adapts this widely deployed desktop technology to handheld devices with extensions and modifications to evolve a user interface framework more suited for handheld category devices. The development platform is targeted towards open source developers and innovation houses developing applications and new technologies for Linux based Internet connected handheld devices.
History and background of maemo
Maemo is a result of Nokia's effort to develop a handheld device based on Linux and open source technologies. The first product that resulted from this effort is the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet. Maemo development platform enables development for the Nokia Internet Tablet product category. The motivation behind maemo and its availability to the open source community is to stimulate mobile Linux technology development and adoption.

Right or left, it's still a pretty cool little device. Nice size and quick enough. The automatic word completion works pretty well. It even remembers phrases you entered before. Screen is 200dpi, so nice and sharp. Battery lasted about two days with pretty heavy 'new gadget ' usage. WIFI is pretty good too, picking up stuff I don't see on the laptops. Happy with mine so far. Nice toy, and extendable if you´re a bit of a linux weenie

This is a bad picture (I used my cell phone), but it shows remote desktop to my work PC from the Nokia. Just one of many apps you can download for it.
Its so small its hard for me to read (old age) the desktop is actually very sharp. I just need my glasses or a magnifying glass
Notice the size relative to the PC keyboard.

Cool! Unfortunately, the advantages of minaturization seem to be offset by the increasing need for eye magnification. We keep reading glasses stashed all over the house. We buy the kind that have feet so its a constant search to see where they are congregating. When we can plug the display into our head (wireless of course) all will be solved.[JiF][AARP]Grimp wrote:This is a bad picture (I used my cell phone), but it shows remote desktop to my work PC from the Nokia. Re: Ordered a New Toy
I found it handy for storing the web info pages of geocaches so I don't have to print them out when I go.
GAim and mail are useful on it too when out and about as long as you can find a wireless connection.
I need to get a tunnel connector working on it so I can connect to work with it.

I put in some hidden night vision web cameras around my house and found that they are actively moving at night.so its a constant search to see where they are congregating
If you see them moving during the day shoot them they are probably rabid.
I think if I could put a small GPS tracking device on them I could keep track of them on my Internet tablet.

Re: Ordered a New Toy
Ok so questions:
Will skype work? I see that it does for the 2007 OS.
Is there an IM program that works on it?
How is web browsing? usable?

Voice: No Skype yet. Gizmo works, Google Talk, SIP client
Instant message: GAIM, Goggle, Gizmo, jabber
Web browsing is usable, not great. It uses Opera and some things/sites just don't work. JiFF works

Re: Ordered a New Toy
Just started messing with Gizmo. You can use Gizmo for VoIP, AIM, MSN and Yahoo Messenger.
I also installed DOOM. Remember when you could not afford a PC to play Doom Now you can play it on a little toy
Well if you can see it you can

Now that you've had it a while - any more thoughts?
