GPS Guru's
Any recommendations on a hand held unit? Want to try some geocaching, don't need anything too fancy or expensive.
You've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

The Garmin Etrex series would prolly do for a starter.

That one dones not have maps on it though. I think you probably would be happier with something that shows your location on a map.
Maybe like this: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product. ... ll=3496513
If you want full blown GPS functions yet portable with good battery life look at the GSMAP 60 and GSMAP 76 series.
They are pretty sweet, but you pay for it. Good thing is you can use them in your car for turn by turn routing to get you to the Geocache trail or the nearest fast food place
GARMIN HANDHELD GPS CLICKY
I have a GSMAP 60CS I got used for $200. It came with a belt case, car power adapter, PC interface cable and TOPO maps.
I have since bought the City Navigator maps $130, bicycle mount $30, external magnetic antenna for my wifes van $30 (for some reason it won't pick up in the van, window treatment or something).
You would also want NMIH batteries and charger. In a pinch plain old AA batteries are fine.

I have the GPS and all that other jazz on my Nextel phone. I used the turn by turn directions from it to get to Nor'Easter and it worked good. I can the Geocache software for it and there is like 4 or 5 other types of GPS software I can get for it. I started to buy one of the Garmin GPS units but I figured why spend the money on it then pay the monthly fee when I can just pay the fee for it on my phone.
You must be young and stupid before you can be old and wise.

New Garmin Plugin
----------------------
Last week, Garmin released a browser plug-in that allows for much easier communication between its GPS devices and websites with GPS information, including geocaching.com. You'll now see a "Send to GPS" button on every cache page - once you've downloaded and installed the plugin (available at http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/), just attach your GPS device, click the button, and go - the information is transferred directly with no 3rd-party software required. Currently, the plugin is compatible with IE 6+ and Firefox 1.5+ for Windows users only, though Garmin promises to deliver Mac support soon.
