Don't know what to try next

Post by [JiF]Crash »

Aww right... I'm about to throw in the towel.

After all the changes I'm still having issues with ALL BF and friends. This happens with em all BF, RTR, BFV, and BF2

I had this issue about 2 years ago. But I have a complete new system. I get lots of teleporting followed by 10 seconds of "connection problems detected". It lasts 10-15 seconds. When I reappear I'm way off course from where I was in game.

I have tried:

1. a new router.
2. going cable modem direct.
3. new cables.
4. a new cable modem (did increase my speed, but not the game issue).
5. uninstalling my anti virus.
6. switched between on board and PCI Ethernet cards.

I don't know what else to try. This happened even before my reinstall of XP.

Suggestions??

This may sound stupid, but I had a simular problem a while back when I updated my video card. In bios I had the wrong memory size selected. :?

Are you sure these problems aren't caused by your name? Maybe you could try using a different handle to see if it clears things up. How about [JiF]Abend?

Heres the update.

I loaded BF onto my laptop. Patched the game. Loaded JiF, Connection issues like my tower.

I also reloaded Windows with a valiv key on the tower. Updated to sp2, patch the heck outa of it. Loaded BF, patched BF. Connection issues.

I went cable direct on both systems, connection issues. tried both ethernet connection on both systems.

I pull great numbers from the speed tests. I have a brand new modem and took my router out of the scenerio.

The only things I can think of is:
1. the patches that I got from the JiF download area are breaking the game??, but they installed fine
2. I somehow have a weird connection coming in. But I can download fine.. no service interuptions...

Totally stumped on this as I now really don't know what else to try. I certainly can't have a tech out to the house as the service is fine.

Could the patches be bad?? On the tower system this issue happens on all BF and BF2....

Two different systems (laptop and tower), one place for the patches and one internet connection, is that correct?

I've downloaded the patches from JiF, no issues. I'm sure others have as well. Which really only leaves your internet connection. If it happens on your laptop too, why not go to a friend who has a broadband connection (would be nice to be a different ISP), and try it there. If the connection problems go away there, then it probably is your ISP.
You've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Yup - I agree with Kelly. The common denominator is your internet connection. So try it at a friend's house.

Comcast tech is coming out Monday AM. With the service working ok for surfin, but not for gaming, I hope they can fix something that is already kinda working.

Todays speeds from MA to NJ within 10 minutes of eachother:

4440 / 188 (Kbps)
(542 / 22.9 KB/sec)

8785 / 209 (Kbps)
(1072.4 / 25.5 KB/sec)

What is the minimum bandwidth that a system needs to run BF on? I've has speeds as high as 9000kbps, but still can't connect to servers. What did we have for speeds back in 2002 when we started playing BF??

I just feel that the service call on Monday is not going to yield much.

Shuck... Smuckers... is there anything to ask or tell the tech when they come here??

Thanks

Have you tried a trace route to the pot luck server? It may show where the problem lies. I have in the past seen problems with some DNS Servers that cause all sorts of stupid connection problems.

I can try, but BF has issues with any server I use. I seem to have issues after hop 10 (12.125.47.34)????

I went though that about a year ago. My DSL out of this area passed though a router owned by BELL in Barrie. The router had a heating issue and would disconnect every few seconds, stay off for 5 to 10 seconds then reconnect. Over time the disconnects were getting longer and more frequent. Bell refused to acknowledge that this was a problem since it only really affected gamers, RDP and TS users. People just browsing and using email noticed a little slowness but not enough to complain.

I used HLSW http://www.hlsw.org to capture a series of connection graphs comparing Bell DSL to another service in the area (I used RDP to use a friends DSL connection to capture a record of the same connection through a different DSL service). I would email a copy of my results to the tech support each morning. It took two weeks for them to admit they had a problem and a threat of taking it to the local press before they would fix it. What a pain.

Well..

The technician was out and of course found nothing. All my levels are great. There going to ask Tier 2 when the guy comes back in on Monday

Tonight I'm going to put my old Toshiba modem back online with comcast and see how it goes.

At this point I don't know what else to try....

* 2 different machines, 1 with a fresh install of XP and patched.
* 2 different modems
* NO router involved.
* I went direct to the line coming into the house and bypassing all splitters. I brought my system down to the basement and hooked the modem direct to the line coming into the basement, still issues.
* Happens on all BF, BF2, FH, anything gaming that requires a constant solid connection.

It has to be your ISP, or something along the lines of what badger described.
You've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?
