Comcast speed??? Shuck... Smuckers... anyone
I'm thinking that my 6 year old Toshiba PCX1100 is dieing. I chatted with Comcast and they say that this modem has been phased out for some time and won't even work with the faster service coming.
But the thing still works. Could this be the reason that the wife can't even surf while I game? Before (summer) this was not an issue. I swapped out the routers and still bad. I went cable direct and gaming was ok, but that was just me on the modem.
Anyhoo. I went to a couple cable speed sites and they all say my connection blows.
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests
"Speed Test Result
339 / 109 (Kbps)
(41.4 / 13.3 KB/sec)
Compared to the average of 2736 tests from comcast.net:
* download is 95% worse, upload is 79% worse"
Comcast is saying the Motorola 5120 is the best they have.
$80 local stores
$40 eBay
or
$3 a month rental from Comcast
I'm thinking of getting one off of eBAy and trying it out. If all goes well then I'll keep it. If the connection still blows, I'll have comcast come out and see whats going on.
Suggstions??

Crash, If you think its a problem, it's a problem. You can either go to a local office to swap it out or schedule a service call. If you have any doubt swap it out.
I just did a speed test to a server in NJ and got 8275kbps down and 951kps up. Tested Florida and got 2378kbps down and 950 kbps up. I have found that the speed test vary so much that i do a few to try and get a better average.

Judging by experience i have around 8500 down and 350 up. All I can tell you is the modem does indeed matter if I recall correctly. It won't hurt anyway upgrading it, they only last so long before you get random issues. I can tell you that your speeds are pretty slow for regular cable (which is what I have)

I have Comcast in NH and I just got 8512Kbps/363Kbps from Parsippany, NJ.
I'm supposed to have 6Mbps/384Kbps. I'll generally get my full uplink speed, but the downlink goes all over the place. It bursts up to like 12Mbps, but most of the time it's down around 2-3Mbps.
I'm pretty happy with it so far... I've had Comcast for a few months now and it's been ok. Verizon DSL was great, but I couldn't see the point in paying for DSL + phone line when I never used the phone line (I always use my cell). Cable + modem saves me about $20/month.
The only thing I miss from Verizon was my uplink since I had 768Kbps up. That was nice.

I tried getting a newer modem to boost my speeds since I still have a Surfboard SB2100 (from @home), turned out the new modem I bought is the only one that has problems with comcast, and has a comcast specific firmware. In the end I went back to my trusty SB2100, which not only had better signal to noise ratios, but faster speeds overall.
