DVI-D vs. D-Sub

Post by [JiF]KellysHero »

My Dell 20" LCD monitor has 4 connection options, D-SUB, DVD-D, S-Video, and RCA input. I can display 1600x1200 with no issues using the DVI-D connection, but if I switch it over to the D-Sub (old time SVGA) it gets blurry. I can't change the refresh rate and it only gets better going to a lower resolution. Is this just a limitation of the D-Sub connection?

it's more likely the the refresh rate. try it a 60 hertz or was it 85? I ran into a fuzzy thing running off the vga cable and tweaking the refresh cleared things right up.

I also have a 20" Dell LCD (2001FP). The VGA only looks good if I'm hooked up to a higher quality video source. My 6600GT and 7900GS look great, but my older cards, 9600XT, GeForce 2, etc. all looked fuzzy.

I tried a 6800 and my 7600GT, both looked crappy. Refresh rate is locked at 60 hertz. Probably the crummy cable I'm using.

opcenter, can you run at 1600 x 1200 with the d-sub?

Yep, that's all I run at because anything lower looks awful. :)

It could be the cable, with analog transmissions, the cable is everything. The one I'm using came with my monitor... I think. Oh wait, I may have "borrowed" it from my last job. :)

Good call! I picked up a new cable and it's a lot better. Not quite as good as the DVI source though.

Well I tried firing up BF2142 using the new VGA cable and I'm getting some weird results. The graphics all have a red tint to them and the image on my screen is shifted about 3 inches to the right. Was too lazy to switch cables and run my gaming rig using the DVI instead...I'll do that tomorrow.
