You will need Origin if you do not have it. It's like Steam but from EA. Here is the link for it: http://www.origin.com/download" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Create an account and install it.

Open this in Internet Explorer, it did not work for me in Firefox. IE10 did work fine
It should be pretty straight forward from there. I searched the store for BF42 in the Origin client, but it didn't show up. Using the website I was able to get it to install.
-Update-
I installed the free version and was able to see the server in the broswer. I was not able to join though, I didn't have the current map.
I wonder if we can find a way to install some of the expansions on the free version.
