Chopper-hunting Javelin teams, or why I love BF3

Post by [JiF]Uncle Stinky »

Someone in another thread asked if a people liked BF3 better than other similar games, and why.

One of the things I like about the game is that it encourages, and rewards, good team play.

An excellent case in point is the use of Javelin teams, something that Gib, Jimbo, Gav and Smuckers have perfected.

In BF3, there are some guys who are simply brilliant at flying the heavy attack helicopters. They can swoop in and out, laying down a blistering layer of fire that will even take out guys hiding in buildings. They cannot be brought down by small arms fire, and can evade simple air-to-air missiles by popping flares. To counter them, you need a Javelin team.

This team normally consists of one or two engineers with the Javelin rocket launchers, a recon soldier who can spot the choppers with his SOFLAM lock-on spotting tripod, and a support soldier who can resupply the first two guys with rockets and SOFLAMs. When they are working together, than can literally wipe the sky clean of any air threats. One of the bggest thrills for me in the game is watchng that missile home in on and obliterate chopper that has been shooting up your base.

On some maps, such as Kharg Island, a whole game-within-the-game can develop where the javelin teams are moving around on the ridge and the opposing team keeps sending choppers, tanks and soldiers to the ridge to take them out.

The side that has the best teamwork usually wins, and that's the challenge and attraction of BF3 for me.

This is why I usually go support if I know we have a Javelin team up and running. I do my best to protect the Javelin guys. I've picked off several people using Javelin's on the other team because they are so focussed on firing the Javelin that they lose situational awareness. So the ability to lay down a lot of firepower quickly helps protect the team.

I should also point out that a good team in armor with a passenger who can repair is also a lot of fun. I don't like to drive and really prefer to be the repairman. Plus you can hop out and fire a SMAW or RPG to help take on enemy armor in some cases. Not to mention the few times you get to pick off Jimbo trying to plant C4. :)

Oh, and if you are supporting and protecting, keep out of sight and only fire when you have to protect the team to keep your position hidden. I made the mistake of sticking my head up at least once when I shouldn't have.

Roger that on the vehicle team. When I someone repairing your tank it's possible to reach ridiculous scores now and again. I wish I could give a portion of the kills I get with a tank to my crews because you can't get the kills without them!
