Bad Router????

Post by [JiF]Crash »

Ok,.. I found out that my router is giving me gaming issues.

Currently I have my comcast modem going into my 4 port router. When I hook into the router and Join a BF game I get disconn'd soon after I join a game. Sometimes its imediate, sometimes its after 3 minutes. If I bypass the router and go direct to the modem from the PC I don't get disconn'd from games. I have been using this router for 5 years flawlessly with all sorts of BF and friends. This is also what prompted me to re image my PC and start fresh.

Some tidbits:
- I turned off and even uninstalled antivirus.
- I upgraded the firmware on the linksys router
- Tried different ports on the router.

The router works fine surfin, downloading stuff, but when I goto use BF and friends it disconnects me..

Any suggestions??

you need to blame punkbuster... I think that's the rule at least. I have problems with BF2142 sometimes where it will just bounce me back to desktop and close the program when I click join. The other weird one was last night whereas I spawned and I could not move nor shoot. I could cycle through my weapons but they would not change and I could type... I thought it was a bug and if I chose another spawn point I'd be ok. Well same thing no matter where i spawned. I think something was overheating because I still have cooling issues with my rig.
I was going to get another 6800GT and run SLI is it worth it?

Naw... I really narrowed it down to the route. Played for 45 minutes fine without the router. I reconnect the router and disconn's after just seconds to minutes... Disconnd'd to the game menu where it says "disconnected from the server"

What the hay could it be... I have the normal setting for the router... nothing fancy. I use close to default settings..

Any software firewalls you running??

Those are a killer fo BF. I remember I had a ton of that happening with that, so went to only my netgear firewall/router as protection.

My BEFSR41 Linksys began doing that about a year ago (it was about 3 years old). It was the first sign the unit was dying. My guess is that it was simply overheating after running for over 26,280 hours without a break.

I spent quite sometime trying to solve the problem without success. Opened ports, assigned a DMZ to my gaming PC, turned on and off UPNP, turned on and off gaming mode, reset to default etc... Finally I replaced it with a SMC router that I got at Best Buy for $5 (after $70.00 instant in store rebate). I wrote it off as the price of sanity (insert joke here).

Badge I was thinking the same thing. This router is over 6 years old and powered on without a day off. I will keep the router or sell for cheap on ebay.

It'll be a few days b4 I can get out to Compusa.

why CompUSA? If you're going to wait a couple days go with NEWEGG!

Only one reason for CompUSA... INSTANT GRATIFICATION. :)

And when you need something RIGHT NOW. Also, occasionally they have good deals, especially on blank DVD-Rs.

Well I bought the Linksys WRT54G @ Compusa to replace my 6 yr old Linksys BEFSR41. Instantly fixed my BF issues.

Now if I could figure out how to setup the wifi... But as long as the 4 port router is working I'm good..

Thanks all for the help
