New Rig
I'll be building my first PC soon. Picked up parts today. I'll let you know what I got when I figure it out myself. My son picked out the pieces. It should be much better than my current rig: ~5 years old.

It's only a ten hour drive and a border crossing to bring the parts up if needed....[JiF]ALargeWoodenBadger wrote:Good luck Tissue - (do you need my cell number?)

Re: New Rig
The real question is, in your parts list, did he get you a copy of BF3??

Tissue, they have BF3 on sale for $30 (at least it was the other day!) You'll love it, you can carry mines as well as an RPG!

Re: New Rig
The system is up and running first try. Just need let it update a bit and then make the cables pretty inside. It will Mon before I get switch over from my old PC. So far so good.
I'll check out BF3 for $30.

Re: New Rig
I'm already very irritated at how slow the old PC seems now compared to the new one, but it will take me another day or so to complete the switch. Then I'll wipe the old one, reinstall the OS and put it in my 'recording studio' to replace the 10 year old one I've got down there. It is my last PC with a 3.5 in floppy drive.
Case: V3 Black Edition VL80001W2Z
Motherboard: Biostar T Series Model TZ68A+RCH (package deal with CPU)
CPU: Intel i5-2500k, 3.30 GHz, 6MB Cache
Graphics Card: Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD5770/PCI-E 2 1 1GB GDDR5
They were out of the card I wanted and this was a good value. It is okay for BF3, but doesn't meet all the recommendations. I can always upgrade this sometime next year.
Power Supply: Antec Current Gamer 520W
Hard Drive 1: Agility 2.5” SSD 120 GB (This was not in my original budget, but I saved a few bucks on other items and thought it would be cool to have a SSD).
Hard Drive 2: Reusing 500 GB drive from current PC
Memory: Microcenter 8 GB DDR3-1333
OS: Windows Home Premium 7 SP1 64BIT
Cooler: One with case and added SickleFlow 120 2000 RPM Blue LED Fan
I was $6 over budget, but have $80 in rebates coming so I'm happy. My current PC is 6 years old and showing it's age. I used to replace every 3 years so I'm long overdue. This is the first one I've put together on my own. My son did help me with the final wiring.

Nice, and you can't go wrong with the SSD! It makes a huge difference.

Re: New Rig

Re: New Rig
I bought everything at Microcenter. My son was in town and I knew I'd have 'tech support' if needed. He wanted to compare prices on line and get the best deal, but I just wanted to get it built while he was around. There may be better prices on the parts out there. For just the hardware, I paid under $575 with the sales deals and rebates. I also picked up a copy of Windows 7 and Office that added to the total, but I'm guessing you are just interested in the hardware cost. I bought everything new except for the second hard drive (500 GB -- the second drive in my current PC). If you have parts that would cut the cost.clant wrote:how much did that cost?
There are several Jif'ers very knowledgeable about PC parts. If you post in the tech forums with a budget I'm sure you'd get a response.

And the SSD really boots up fast.

Re: New Rig
Tissue, did you open Office yet? Even though you retired, you might be able to get Office 2010 (full version) for about $10 through the employee purchase program.
