SSD's
Hey all,
need some advice....
time to upgrade the NASA control center I call a desktop.
Want to get an SSD (internal) to replace my 2x160GB Raptor HD's.
Dont care so much about the cost. Want something that isnt going to fail immediately like I've read in many forums. Want it as my main, bootable drive.
Any thoughts or experience with any manufacturer's SSD's (256GB or greater)?
Gib - saw you have a Corsair in yours..how u like so far?
I've looked at the OCZ ones and also saw the new Alienware rig from Dell uses Samsung's.
Curious on people's experiences with this.

Rapters??! Egad Waterboy, you are replacing parts that I some day aspire to owning. If you could just post your address - I would very much like to go through your trash bins. (I promise I'll leave any pictures Justin Bieber exactly where I find them)

Re: SSD's
Badge & BG!!!
Long time guys!
Once I replace, you could actually HAVE them....
They just turned 4 years old, and feel they need to be "let go"...
Good to hear about the Samsungs. That's what the Alienware system uses (2x256GB).
I was hoping to go PCI-e, but looked into my motherboard, and only have a PCI-e x1 slot and two, x16 slots (both occupied with my dual GeForce 8800 ultra vid cards)
Only one PCI slot is available, but is irrelevant...

Re: SSD's
Ok,
Installed the new SSD (Samsung 256GB 830 series, 2.5" 6 Gbps) to replace my internal ones
Also upgraded to Windows 7 FULL from Vista Ultimate FULL.
Top lines so far (so far - overall, nice!!):
1. Wow - ripping out two, 3.5" HHD's and replacing makes my case seem empty!!! The case weight drop was nearly 5 lbs!!!
2. Super quiet - only can hear hum from my CPU cooling fan.
3. Power consumption has dropped big time (still quantifying).
4. Win7 S/U and S/D are <5 secs with this drive.
5. Looks like downloads/writing to drive is quicker too. Hard to tell though. Havent done much.
6. No data on games (havent reinstalled them). Actually got a free copy of Batman Arkam City with SSD.
7. Next step - upgrade from 4GB to 8GB RAM. Think that will really help, especially if I go 64bit.
Just hope I get the reliability improvement expected. Heard too many forum comments from others where they have bought, and within days, the drive has failed (praying they were just idiots!!).

thought you were going to get an alienware system though?

Re: SSD's
Kel,
I was..but then decided against the $7000....
Figured this upgrade and maybe some RAM later will get me a few more good years at <$1000.
Plus I have a few other toys I still want to get, like a new Glock 17 or 19 for the range.

Re: SSD's
Guys I think its pretty brave to be so upfront about your SSDs. After all, education is cornerstone of prevention and your openness does you proud. Don't worry, a modern moderate-spectrum, bacteriolytic can usually clear things up in no time. It won't change your start up times but will reduce burning during downloads.
I had a friend who got a SSD once (he said he got from a public toilet seat but I think he got it in a public toilet - aka George Michael) but Penicillin was able to cure it although these days your doctor is more likely to prescribe Amoxicillin or something stronger. Frankly it doesn't matter so long as you seek immediate treatment.
Good luck guys and keep us posted.

Re: SSD's
Thanks guys.
I just ordered from newegg 8Gb of Crucial DDR2 1066Mhz RAM.
Boy was I stupid....should have checked my specs with this in mind.
Had to do a reinstall of Win7 OS with the 64bit set in order to handle/utilize the full capability.
Fortunately the reinstall of everything was only about 1hr and, again, back in the game!
Now we'll see how long it takes me to move the liquid cooling system out of the way to access my RAM mem cards later this week!!!

Waterboy, can your dinosaur of a computer be set to boot from a USB drive? If so, get a 4 gig usb drive, and slipstream your copy of windows 7 onto it.
It takes a bit to get it setup onto the USB flash drive, but once there installation is cut down to about 10-15 minutes.
Here are the instructions.
