Headaches in the Corn field

I picked up BF3 last night along with a 500GB hard drive.
Went home and plugged in new hard drive with an XP boot disc.
My PC did not recognize the hard drive.
After several hours plugging and unplugging hard drive and play with the Bios i decided to go ahead a put the old hard drive back in.
Old Hard drive not detected.
I can get it to detect my DVD-RW not matter where i plug it in but can't get Hard drives to work.
Someone told me to take out the CMOS battery for 30 seconds,but haven't tried that yet.

I have 7 but it's a online purchase student upgrade only that's why i have to install xp first.

Have you tried resetting the bios to default settings? I don't think you should have to clear the CMOS (take battery out) for a hard drive but if you do that you should take it out for up to 24 hrs just to be sure (I think all motherboards are different) but it takes a while for the juice to run out. It looks like your socket is the kind with the little latch on the side so you can put a couple of pennies in there and slip it under the latch so it will take half the time to juice down. Unplug your PSU and put the switch to the off position as well. Look into resetting the CMOS with the jumpers as well.

Yep i went in and tried the default settings,same results.
I also noticed in the Bios there is no SATA slots showing up,it's all IDE.
I do have one IDE slot but it's always been hooked up to one of my DVD-RW drive.
The SATA has always been my hard drive and secondary CD drive.
When i get home i'm going to try hooking up the new hard drive to my secondary PC and at least get xp installed.

I have to get this up and running tonight.
I don't want to be home all weekend staring at a BF3 game i can't play.

I tested both Hard Drives in a secondary PC and could not get it to detect either drive.
It had no problem redetecting the one i took out of it.
I am now unplugging it for the night.
I guess both Hard Drives are dead,some odds on that,1 million to 1?
At this point i feel like using my PC for target practice.


Imagine,my PC worked fine before i decided to upgrade the hard drive from 160GB to 500GB.
Me regrets this

I'm only asking this because it's way too weird that both drives aren't working now, but are you sure that you have the power connector as well as the sata connecter (2 attachments)? I don't think it would be the bios as I've reset it a few times in the past and never had to change anything for it to recognize my sata drives.

Explain exactly what happens when you turn on the computer with the drive connected. Does it make any beeps? What exactly does it say on the screen when it say's there's no drive? etc.

I think the chances of both drives being duds now are more unlikely then winning the lottery twice in a row.

I actually have both drives out and normally you can feel the drive turning inside or hear them when they are on.
I get no noise,nothing.
My PC will not boot up to xp on the so called good hard drive because it doesn't see it.

I was looking over the specs on your mobo...noticed it had one PATA port and four sata. your not plugging in your sata drives to the PATA port are you?

Another reason I am switching to ps3 instead of pc games don't have the money to buy new video cards or upgrades lol

It does make a good case for buying a console.

My troubles seem to have been fixed.
I took my hard drive back to the store and found out it is no good and my old one is also no good.
I am currently installing XP on my new hard drive and hope to be loading Win 7 later tonight.
Murphy's law at work here.

Bad news is that i lost everything that was on my old hard drive.

Using Xp with newer hardware (new SATA drives), you need to slipstream the hard drive drivers onto a new OS install disk. Or you can do the F6 boot fun, which never really works out...
