FIOS upgraded to 50MBs downstream

Post by [JiF]Thos »

Back in July we mentioned how Verizon was now offering 50Mbps/5Mbps connections for customers in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut -- though pricing was different for each area, ranging between $90 and $140 a month. Users in our FiOS forum point out that the telco is expanding their 50Mbps footprint into Massachusetts and Rhode Island as of today. Verizon's middle tier speeds were also raised in these five markets, from 15 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream to 20Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream.
Anyone in MA check to see if they can get it? [CoughTIMMAY!Cough]

I would have to jump all over the 20 Mbps/2 Mbps for $50 a month since I have a 6 Mbps/1 Mbps now for $30 a month.

I wish someone would come in my area and give SBC and Comcast some competition. The 3 main towns in my county have to use SBC but outside of the county you get to choose between SBC and Comcast.

FIOS? FIOS? Wow, outside of my area most people are still using tin cans tied to strings.

I think I'm gonna throw up....
Here in my area of PA our top DSL is 1.5Mbps/768 at $49.99 which is what I've always used although it wasn't till the
beginning of last year it was upgraded to 1.5Mbps....
I don't have cable so that's not an option...besides cable co. advertises
5Mbps at $47 (including basic channels) but that's not guaranteed speed like DSL, right??
Please verify that last comment 'network gurus'....

I think your more likely to get the bandwidth with cable than DSL. I think my cable bill is around $100. Thats with 3 MEG down and 128 or 256 K up. Analog cable TV. Prolly 60 channels. No movie premium channels or pay-per-view.

I switched to DSL from cable a few months ago. I did notice a decrease in download speed but it's not all that bad, 756 megawatchmacallits vs. the 1.5 moremegawatchamacallits. I know cable's speed is set in stone, I don't recall it ever running this slow. But I have yet to reboot my DSL modem or lose connection as compared to cable. I also had 3 days of no internet access when they were "upgrading" our system. In 9 months when my current DSL plan expires, I'll see what cable can offer and maybe make the switch back.
You've got to ask yourself a question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Got an update from my brother in Marlboro about his switch to FIOS for I'Net and TV from Comcast:
I get a TON more channels. Keeping in mind I tend to focus on HD, I get 20 channels (non-movie) in HD. Tough to quantify the other channels since they’re spread out across the number more, but has to be at least 200-250 channels. I get 3 military channels… one that’s focused just on the Navy. Not that I’ve watched most of ‘em yet to know how quality the programming might be… but lots more options.

Interface is different, so a little getting used to there… doesn’t seem to be quite as much selection on OnDemand... internet connection is just as fast if not faster… and the router they install has wireless integral to it. So far quite pleased by it.

Comcast has been doing well for me at home. Plus I'm mostly at college, so its a 100mbs+ connection :D
But I won't have that forever :(

Mmm.... FIOS... *drool*...

My choices are still DSL - 3Mbps/768Kbps for $39.99/mo or Comcast 6Mbps/384Kbps for $39.99/mo & 8Mbps/768Kbps for $49.99/mo.

At the moment, I have the lower Comcast plan, though I may bump it up to the higher one.

I really wish I had FIOS, I would drop Comcast REAL fast. :)

FIOS is having a big impact in my neighborhood. It's only been available for a few months, and already 3 out of 12 houses on my court (including me) have dumped Comcast for FIOS. I can only assume that Comcast will have to start lowering their prices. But even then, there's a quality gap which they can't overcome without upgrading their infrastructure. Fiber-to-the-premises just gives FIOS a huge advantage. The signal quality even on the analog channels is much better than Comcast ever gave us, because the RF signal on the coax cabling is actually initiating at the ONT box on the side of my house instead of some far off Comcast location. And I don't think Comcast could ever match the number of HD channels, total channels, or amount of internet bandwidth available on FIOS. I don't think FIOS is anywhere near their limit, so I expect them to keep adding HD and digital channels and increasing the internet bandwidth they offer.

Now I'm a little jealous of you New Englanders getting 20Mbps, since I'm stuck with a slow 15Mbps here in Maryland. :(
