I picked up one of these fancy machines this morning. It's actually the first handheld console I "purchased" since the Gameboy Color was released (didn't purchase a Color back then, was a youngin' ), and the only console I purchased within 3 years of it releasing. I was even very close to canceling my reservation at Gamestop last night as I was spec'ing out a new PC. I decided to go through with it and reading initial impressions of the device.
There's two things that really sold me:
1) Glasses-free 3D gaming. While I'm not sold on the whole 3D gaming scene, I thought it would be interesting to own the first 3D console, and even better a handheld console! (I don't count VirtualBoy ) They're remaking a few classic games for the Nintendo 3DS (in 3D), including Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
2) The social features of the console. One of the interesting things about the old Nintendo DS that developed over time is a feature games used called "tag mode". You could put a game in tag mode, such as Dragon Quest 9, and walk around with it in your pocket. When you encounter other people with tag mode on, your two devices would share information about the game, your character, and you could seamlessly trade items with each other. That particular game's tag mode was primarily based around trading treasure maps, and you wouldn't be able to get all maps playing alone. Big downfall with that feature is that the person had to have the game in the DS, on (or in sleep mode, e.g. in the game but the lid shut), and in the tag mode portion of the game. The 3DS changed this by when the first time you run a game that has a tagging feature, it would install a service onto the device that would always run no matter what game the person is playing at the time, or what they're doing. So if any two 3DS's passed each other, they would automatically trade information for the device, and all relevant games between the two users. E.g., if someone played Game XYZ, which has the feature implemented, but it's 4 months old and they're playing some other game actively now, the devices would still trade Game XYZ's information. The OS also has a bunch of quirky things that will be traded between systems if two systems meet, which just adds to the fun I suppose. (This feature is called StreetPass: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_3 ... tPass_Mode" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
Anyone else pick one up?

The friend code probably would've been a good thing to include.
