Guitar / Drum choices

Post by [JiF]corn »

My 13 year old son (Kyle) has a cheap acoustic guitar and is currently teaching himself to play.
He uses Tab It system and has a battery operated tuner.

He wants me to buy him an electric guitar and i need some help on what would be good for a beginner.

My 11 year old (Kenton)wants to play drums and has also asked about getting something for him.
I know there are quite a few musicians here and any input would be greatly appreciated.

Theres more than a few opinions your going to get. I can think of a few ways to think of this Corn;

If he's likely to stay with it for the long haul, then spend the $ required to get a good tone, easy to play, stays in tune and has good sustain guitar. To me thats a fixed bridge guitar $900-$1300. Hoever if he like stuff like Van Halen then hes going to need a good locking nut floating whammy bar/bridge system. My Ibanez RG here cost me 1000 though I am not sure of the model.

You can't go wrong with American made guitars like Gibson, Fender(Stratocaster and Telecaster). Gibson Les Paul studio

If he's not dedicated or you dont want to spend the cash for a good guitar, then a decent guitar will do. It will not have all the above factors that I look for in an electric but you CAN find really good cheap ones - he will have to play them and judge by feel of the fretboard. Does it fit him well, is it comfortable, can he easily make chords and play lead on it or not.
Decent guitars are in the 250-550 range from my experience, others will most certainly have differnent experiences and may tell you different.

Either way he needs to play the guitar in the store to see if its easy to play, had tone hes happy with etc. I picked up Steve Via's Gem 777 by Ibanez when it came out in the 80's and I thought it was Blah. Didnt feel right, tone was crap, etc. But those are expensive guitars and even high quality guitars can have a turd show up now and again. The same goes for cheap guitars - while they are not as good, every now an again you find a great playing/sounding axe that is a hell of a find.

Have the store do a setup and get the action as low as possible with no or very little string buzz when he freets notes(check all frets on all 6 strings.

I have found most stores will work with your price range and the guitarist to help find a good match.

If there's anything specific you want to know about post back here. If I don't know it, Daterminatah will! I also defer to his experience so if he says anything contrary to what I said then I'd give his credentials alot more weight :).

btw, my view is this

Gibson Les Paul - classic rock, blues, hard rock
Fender Telecaster - blues and country, rock
Fender Stratocaster - Blues, Rock. Clapton and SRV used these!

Any guitar with a good floating point whammy bar system for modern rock also Van Halen, Vai, Satriani, etc. Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. :pada:

Corn, Just noticed you live in Sugar Land. My daughter lived in Sugar Land for a while. We used to go to an old fashioned ice cream parlor in Rosenberg. Another thought is to find a good independent or local guitar/music store where the people really care about matching you to the right guitar/drums. I've had good luck with that. I've called and talked to places then decided which one to go to based on their answers. Sometimes you can get some good used equipment. Unfortunately, the economy has hit a lot of musicians pretty hard and they have sold off a lot of stuff.

i agree with Dater, it´s no use spending too much money on the first guitar, i got about 15 e-guitars corn & i´m thinking of selling one of them since i don´t need it but it´s a cool one: it´s a yamaha tele, all natural and light weighted, changed the pics into Seymour Duncan Rock Pics & also built in the Rockinger Split: means you can choose between single coil or humbucker by just pulling the nob, it´s almost like new although it has some years but it´s in really good condition and plays well, found a pic of a similar guitar in the net,- have a look, i can send you also pics from my tele if you´re interested, the only problem is, that i live in europe,... I found out yesterday that my 13 yr old really like CCR's music.
Bad moon rising and Fortunate Son.

I'm going to take him down to the Music Store and see if they can fit him into a Guitar.
As far as drum sets, maybe i'll take a little longer to decide.

I also found out that my oldest daughter's boyfriend can play guitar and drums.

Are the electronic drum sets any good?

Drum choices

Post by [JiF]Daterminaytah »

electronic drumsets are good for beginners and intermediate ... but when you get into it you will realize that real drums are the only way to go and is more affordable ... high end electronic drumsets go for a starting range of 3000-7000$ and you will need to buy some things from a real drumset to add to electronic drumsets cause they dont sound natural and have a machine sound rather than an acoutic . where you can get a good set realatively cheap? i suggest checking on ebay or craigslist... make sure when searching you specify that you want everything to "play out/record" ... as it gets expensive if you have to buy hardware/cymbals/kickpedal seperate frrom the drumset

example of a good sale

i bought a tama rockstar classic MAPLE<-- top of the line drumset

6 piece set with all hardware and 5 cymbals all sabian ATX and tuxedo bags for everything but the snaredrum for 1200$ and he was gonna split the set up and sell them seperate which he told me he would have gotten about 3600$(had to drive 2 hrs to pick it up)
THIS DRUMSET GOES FOR ABOUT 12K!!!! so you see there is potential to find wicked killer deals

use "searchtempest" to search all you local surrounding craigslists and i wish you the best of luck

Hello my friend. Of corse this is a personal opinion, but I use to play Fender and believe it to be the best to this day. They range from fairly cheap to SELL YOUR HOUSE FOR. But I believe in sticking with one brand and one sound.
We all have our time to die.....yours just happens to be now
