Oh no PB constantly kicks me

Post by [JiF]Sgt Shellshocked »

I'm so so sad , I am now getting kicked evrytime by PB with a - Service Communication Failure:PnkBstrB.exe handshaking failed

I run Win 7 pro 32 bit ,I have tried the following
uninstall /reinstall Punkbuster
ran pbsvc.exe (install pb as a service)
checked all my compatibility settings (run as administrator bf1942.exe runs in win xp sp 2 mode , PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe in win 98/me mode
I run mse and i tried with firewall switched off also firewall settings for all pb stuff looks ok anyway
This problem occurs with all pb enabled servers and obviously not on servers with no pb
before i get kicked the following happens

There is a delay now before I can hit the ok/ready button when I am about to join a game
Game then starts ok and I see the usual pb messages flash up then it says sucessfully started PnkBstrB.exe and then a couple of seconds later the dreaded kick occurs.

I don't paticularly want to reinstall bf1942 and all the mods unless I really have to.

Has anybody had this problem and knows a solution? Has anyone got any suggestions to fix this - Help Help please help!!! :( :(

Have you tried killing PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe with Taskmanager? :?

Yes tried all those things , I have a sneaky suspicion that it might be a win 7 update issue I'm currently backing out my recent win 7 updates

Steps to fixing latest rash of PB B.exe errors(handshake)

1. Rollback by doing a system retore to a restore point. Top, Shell and I rolled back to March 14.
2. If you use Microsoft Security Essentials, disable realtime protection <--BIGGEST IMPACT
3. In our new downloads section, reinstall the pb fix.

Hope that helps anyone else out. Shell, Top and I are good now.

When I get kicked for handshake issues I simply use services.msc to stop the pnkbstrB.exe then let the game restart it. Seems to work fine.

Thanks for that Gib it has kept us running tonight.
I have been investigating this a little more with the hope that we can still have our MS updates and run MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials)
Anyway after a lot of huffin n puffin and tweakin n twiddling hey bingo we can have our cake and eat it.

Here is the solution , well at least on Win 7 Pro 32 bit although I'm sure it should be ok for xp etc.
This is what you do ...
If you have rolled back your restore point then unroll it to the latest updates
Enable mse
Now what we have to do is tell mse that PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe are good guys so

1. right click on mse computer status icon in system tray
2. select settings
3. select excluded files and locations
4. browse to C:\windows\System32\PunkBstrA.exe
5. Hit add
6. browse to C:\windows\System32\PunkBstrB.exe
7. hit add

8. select Excluded processes
9. browse to C:\windows\System32\PunkBstrA.exe
10. Hit add
11. browse to C:\windows\System32\PunkBstrB.exe
12. hit add

13. Hit Save Changes

You are done
Now you can have your automatic MS Updates and your mse on

The only thing that you may notice is a slight delay just before you start a new map when you hit ready but you shouldn't get kicked anymore

(The file locations on my machine are C:\Windows\System32 , your machine may have a different hard drive D: for example or you may even have a different windows directory
simply browse to the correct location for your machine)

Wow what a crazy day!

That's odd. I am running Windows 7 and MSE, and didn't have the problems some did.

It depends on what Microsoft updates you have installed. At some point if you get one of the updates you will be affected.

You were right, Shell, yesterday I started getting handshake error messages for pnkbstrb.

My pnkbstr files were in my user/local apps folder, and oddly there was only pnkbstrb.exe but no pnkbstrb.exe. But I applied the fix described above to the b file and it solved the issue.
