Stinky's New Modem: A Happy Ending

Post by [JiF]Uncle Stinky »

As some of you may know -- mainly from my complaining all the time on TS -- I've been having bad lag issues when playing BF42 lately. I upgraded my router, which helped but did not solve my problem. I bypassed the router and found the lag was still there. So I finally ditched my 8-year old modem and upgraded to a new Magnavox 6120.

And whoosh, the lag is gone. My ping had been oscillating between 25 and 180; now it remains solidly in the 25-45 range. My sniper fire has become deadly. Maybe i'll finally be able to outduel Gib now in a wiggle-and-shoot dance. I did the CNET spped test and am now getting 30 mbps consistently (before -- ranged from 1.5 to 20).

I guess the moral of the story is: 8 years is way too long to keep any piece of computer-related hardware.

I should know better than to tempt the gods. Though my connection is much better, I'm still spiking up to 180 ping now and then. Got a new modem, new router, and the cable guy came today and replaced all the wiring in connection with new cable TV service. Not sure what more I can do.

The foolproof method is to move house and move into the server room and connect with a lan cable
