coming out of the political closet

Post by [JiF]ALargeWoodenBadger »

You may have noticed an up tick in the number of odd postings I’ve been making over the last few weeks. Whenever I’m under a great deal of pressure I tend to drop by here a chum the waters. For me it’s sort of a pressure release value and hopefully a harmless one. As only Tissue knows, a few months ago I became so enraged with the performance of our local government I ran for office. I paid my $100 candidate fee and bought myself the right to complain loudly for the 45 day official campaign period. As a result - I was accidentally elected to office. Oops – of mice and men.

As a result of knocking off a well known politician, one who was considered to be the front runner for the mayor’s chair in a few years, I’ve become the target of every surviving member of council. They accuse me of organizing a ‘conspiracy with the voters’ not only to get myself elected but also to overthrow the sitting Mayor and Deputy Mayor (yeah I helped do that too - sorry). Yes I said that correctly – ‘a conspiracy with the voters.’ I will not deny or confirm the veracity of that statement, but I do acknowledge its truthiness. I’ve also been accused of using my ‘education and intelligence to win arguments.’ Huh???? When you’ve been in office too long, as have many of our incumbent councillors, you often mix up the meaning of the words democracy and demagoguery.

So far the fight has been behind the scenes but it has been brutal, mean spirited and entirely dishonest. =sigh= So much for open and transparent debate. I’ve always been an idealist when it comes to public service (I can quote Jefferson at the drop of a hat – albeit poorly and inaccurately) but I find my dark cynical side becoming stronger with each passing day. The promise and reality of politics is like night and a much much darker night. The pull of the dark side is unrelenting.

Even out in the world everything has changed. We have two papers in town. The one paper openly supported my opponents in the last election. Since then it has been unable to acknowledge my political existence. The other paper is best known for its absorbency. I’ve always done a lot of charity work here in town and over the last few years it has not been unusual for me to be involved in a public fund raising event. Generally, when a councillor is involved in a charity event protocol has it that they be identified with their title. Since my election I have been pictured on the front page twice and featured three or four times in the front section. Each instance revolved around charity and community work. Each time I’ve been identified as ‘concerned citizen Glen C’ or ‘local business person Glen C’ …etc. Never as a councillor? Not that it matters, it just strikes me as odd.

I believe that part of the issue is the fact that I was not born in this town or province for that matter. I retain the ‘know-it-all outsider’ status regardless of my commitment to the town. But this town is changing and soon we ‘know-it-all outsiders’ will become a force to be reckoned with! Oops, there is that dark side again.

Tomorrow I’m going to have my head shaved to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. (You can check out my appeal web page here - Oh, feel free to help out! just press the "Support Glen" button: http://convio.cancer.ca/site/TR/Copsfor ... fr_id=9732) Anyone who has seen me knows that shaving my head involves a half second of intense cutting activity followed by five minutes of guffaws. Often they don’t need to use a razor since a tweezers are just as effective – and faster. You could say I have a high forehead – in fact it ends just above my shoulder blades (insert 'rim shot' here). The oddly named Cops-for-Cancer (I know I made the joke too “myself I’m against cancer!”) event usually makes the front page of both papers, although they may decide to focus on some of the other participants, we’ll see if my new political non-status is still intact.

So, if you notice a degree of ‘forced insanity’ in any of my postings it is just a result of stress induced by my new status. I assure you my real insanity is undiminished, unchanged and unhinged.

Yours truly,

ALargeWoodenBadger

Yes, Badger confided in me that he was involved in local Canadian politics, but ONLY AFTER it was too late for me to advise him of the quagmire he was getting involved in. So I admire my hair challenged friend for his contribution to the fight against cancer - both the disease of the body and the disease of the government.

Ooh, ooh, ooh... when you shave your head and you get cold (because you are losing all that insulation) check out the Mountain Man #2 Badger hat. You could wear it to council meetings... http://www.usafoxx.com/fur-hats-mens.htm

keep up the good work badger. i im proud to be aquinted with people of your caliber in todays age

heres just the start of fixing politics and government:
MANDATORY drug and alchohol screening bi-weekly(creating thousands of drug screening and alchohol clinics/jobs) for ALL state and federally funded workplaces/workers .... that way we dont have drunks and drug users manipulateing our laws to suit the criminals or organized crime or themselves/familys and make spending of taxpayers money easier to see the money trail by allowing people to have access to documents and reciepts of state and local purchases so they can see "theres nothing to hide" and feel more secure and confident in our justice system

LOVE and HOPE from My family to all of Yours

Canadian Government Attacked by Hackers

A massive cyberattack on Canadian government websites and employees, has given hackers access to an abundance of highly classified federal information and has forced more than two major departments of the government to disconnect themselves from the internet.
