Ok, I dont like the winter

Post by [JiF]Thos »

We had ourselves a nice little ice storm up here in NH. Tress looked cool all covered in ice, gently sagging branches reaching for the ground, but messing with the power lines on their way down. Had some power surges tonight and it fried my server :(. Yes I had it hooked up to a surge protector, but there was a stretch of a dozen surges within 20 seconds that did it. Guess I should have been smarter and turn it off for the evening.

Oh well, I have it isolated down to being either the motherboard or the CPU. Been thinking it was time upgrade it anyways. I only use this server to store files and run P2P programs, so it doesn't need to be too beefy. The only requirements I have are PCI-E and SATA II.

Coming from:
Abit KT7A
1GB RAM 133MHz
AMD 1GHz Duron
6 160GB drives in a RAID 5 config with a Promise SX6000 RAID controller
20GB drive for the O/S -- Window 2003 Ent Server.
Geforce MX2 Video Card
3COM 10/100 NIC

Don't have a whole lot to spend on it, but this is what I am looking at; looking to start small and have room to upgrade down the road:

We used to call that a "glitter storm" on the east coast. They happen there all the time. In 84 we lost power for 12 days when a couple of hundred miles of hydro towers were crushed by the glitter. Took about two years before the branches on the trees began to grow back.

On the bright side they had to delay final exams due to the lack of power, those 12 days locked in my freezing basement apartment with nothing but a gas lantern to for light and heat and no TV to stop me from studying saved my butt.

Oh yeah - the system sounds fine.
