I've been having a lot of fun with this new game from Stardock. If any of you are old enough to remember the old Microprose game called Master of Magic, this is that game's logical successor. It's a classic civ-building game -- you start out with your leader and one city -- but with a magic/fantasy overlay. So as you are expanding your empire and researching new weapons and skills such as famring, you are also researching new spells and unlocking new magical allies to recruit or summon. There are some quests your leader can undertake. You can also create your own starting leader, making him or her strong in combat, magic or other areas.
The AI is variable -- some games I've won pretty easily, but others I've been overwhelmed by waves of troops. It's definitely been worth the $49.99 I paid for the digital DL + hard copy edition.
Yu can get it from Stardock's Steam-like manager called Impulse.
Here's a review of it.

Re: Elemental: War of Magic
Indeed this game looks like Master of Magic and the review gives a 9/10

the same game sounds unfinished and looks more beta version than a final release (too many bugs). in addition, the multiplayer mode is only active in the menu, but you can't play online.
