When in Manhattan, everything to see is south of central park.
It is also "safer" in that area.
Good bars & nightlife in Greenwich Village
Eat at south street seaport, little Italy, Chinatown
See the empire state building & take the ferry to the statue of liberty.
Take your girlfriend to a show

Enjoy!

Yeah, the Empire State building is a must. From the top you get an incredible view of the city.

The thing I love about NYC is the food -- you'll find great cuisine from just about every country on the planet. In fact, NYC's Koreatown is in the area near the Empire State building -- if you've never had Korean style BBQ (called bulgogi), check it out. You cook it right at your table. Another favorite of mine is the Puerto Rican food --- there's a restaurant called Old San Juan up above Broadway that has great food for a very reasonable price (try the mofongo -- mashed plantains mixed with garlic and spices and fried, molded into a little mountain and covered with meat and sauce).

Also, check out some of the half-price ticket places for cheap(er) Broadway show tickets. Your hotel, or a NYC tourist office, should be able to steer you to right ones.

If the Mets or Yankees are in town, you could also go see a baseball game.

The view from Rockefeller Center is better then the Empire State in my opinion. Planetarium is good...

I haven't done most of the tourist-y stuff in NYC, but I have been to a few places I can recommend. Not sure how things are in Europe, but in the US, tip ~15% for good service at a sit down restaurant. Take out orders we don't normally tip for, delivery you definitely tip a few bucks. Cab drivers get $1 or more tip depending on how you feel, service, etc. NYC has the best public transit in the US though, so use it. It'll cost you a couple bucks for a card and then $2-2.50 per person, per trip anywhere in the city. Tourists typically stick to the surface streets and cabs though, it'll cost more, but you get to see more as well.

Great!

been in new york twice as a tourist. ake sure u get on the empire state building(day and night would be best u'll pay twice but u get to see 2 diffenrent views of NY). dont take the boat to go to the statue of liberty(u'll wait for hours and wont see that muc) best is to take the ferrie that drives over to new jersey and goes back ull drive close toi the statue and thats good enough(u can seat out side on the boat and u'll have a good view of the statue(make sure u seat on the right side of the boat. i didnt know that and wondered where the statue was until we drove back and i realized that on the way down i was sitting on the wrong side of the boat:-) stupid frenchtourist). go to timesquare at night and enjoy the light show(hard rock caffe is there also take a look at it) 5th avenue during the day for some shooping and the chance to see huge stores with crazy stuff to buy. go see the place were the twin towers used to be(very impresive and hard to understand how nothing else got destroyed)

Hi rix, my poi´s are:

No. 1: http://www.amnh.org/rose/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(saw the show with "the dark side of the moon" - perfect -, hall of the sun - a must seen place by me)

No. 2 : http://www.moma.org/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
(meet the pyramidzone - with enough time - and you feel like 3.000 BC in giseh/egypt)

and No. 3 - all the rest of the city that never sleeps ... in front was by me: the shops in SoHo ...

Thx for all your good tips!
We did
-take the staten island ferry to get a good view of the Statue of liberty (8rix of 10) instead of going to the Liberty island. Thx Frenchy!
-the "top of the rock" (Rockefeller center) instead of Empire state both day and night time (9rix of 10),
we got a good view over the city and the empire state building.
-pass by "Ground zero" and wall steet (5rix)
-split, I for Intrepid(Aircraft-Carrier WW2 til 1974) and a lot of moderna aircraft (9rix) while she went shopping (phew).
-fly helicopter over Hudson river with view over Manhattan and New Jersey (Birthday-surprise-gift from my GF) (10rix)
-go to a concert (Melody Gardot) in Central park (7rix)
-Macys, all these fancy areas downtown (Soho...) (5rix)
-Brooklyn bridge + a little peace of Brooklyn
-Harlem, ~125-145th street (was nice)
-stood in line for cheap tickets to musical, ended up not buying since it was too expecive ~70$ for Mama mia
People were kind and polite (not really expected that)

I've always found New Yorkers very direct, but usually helpful.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself.
