M1 Carbine

Post by [JiF]Mike »

I have an opportunity to purchase a Universal M1 Carbine. It incudes 2 30 round magazines and 8 or so 15 round magazines, some are loaded. It also includes 2 boxes of ammo. It's in pretty good shape but I'm just not sure about the quality overall. Anyone know anything about these? Here are some pictures.

The gun looks to be in great condition. Plus that would be a fun gun to own, I say get it!

The asking price is $350.00. I fired a few shots with it yesterday...nice action, very little recoil which surprised me. I am very interested in owning the gun...just not sure I wanna spend $350.00 on a replica. I found this write-up on a gun forum:
There are three or four versions of the Universal. The 1st used a cast receiver that accepted all of the GI parts. The 2nd was a 60% GI parts and 40% cast commercial parts. Barrel may or may not have been GI. The 3rd. used 75% of the parts that were cast. The barrel was made by 'others'. Trigger housing looked just like the GI version but it was cast aluminum. Stock was 'tree wood'. 4th. was an accident waiting to happen. Op slide was stamped/brazed with a hole in its side to move the bolt around. It had two recoil springs. Trigger housing was one inch thick cast aluminum. Retainer pins-hammer, trigger & trigger housing were mild steel and bent if you looked at them the wrong way. None of the parts were even surface hardened, and began to show after a few hundred rounds.

If the rifle has an aluminum trigger housing either narrow or wide be aware that it might be dangerous.

The best advice I can pass along is call you gun smith before you shoot any more.

PS: How much insurance does your wife have on you? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I am pretty sure this one is a fourth generation. I will probably offer $200 since it seems like it's quality makes it more of a show piece than a gun. I've read similar write-ups in other places..but this one was pretty specific.

Mike:

I am a collector and have I have a "real" M1 Carbine as well a as M1 Garand ,among others.

Don't waste your money on something that is not WWII vintage.

Go to some gun shows and make a deal on a "real" one

My neighbor is selling it and I returned it this morning. They were nice enough to let me hold onto it for a few days to do some research and mess with it. They inherited it so really knew nothing about it. They did lower the price to $300, but I told them what I had found and that I really wanted something more authentic. I was going to offer $200, it is a really cool looking gun, but they said they had someone else pretty seriously interested so didn't bother. I told them to let me know if that didn't work out. $200 for a show piece that could be fired occasionally wouldn't be terrible. :)

lol.. no I think NH law is they have to be threatening my life or something. If there's ever a Zombie Apocalypse I have a big 12-gauge that is very intimidating. My security training back in the Navy taught me one thing I'll never forget; a 12-gauge is one of the most recognizable and intimidating guns around. If there's a threat, often just it's presence is enough to stop someone in their tracks. :) It even scares off animals, which is what I actually use it for now lol. The Red Squirrel population around my house is almost non-existent! lol

hi Mike,

Waow this gun is in very good state, but i don't understand is that class warfare or 22 long riffle ? but anyway in good state....
you're lucky in your country, you are allowed to own riffle class warfare, but in France it is totally forbidden, or it is allowed if you have licence in a club (but forbidden to wear on you with ammo) only in suitcase with ammo not in the same suitcase.

I have friend of me who own asault riffle M16 ohhh it is very beautiful, class warfare and lot of ammo..and also colt python 357 magnum, riot gun, and colt 45 he is really good shooter very often trained with police.

In france you can own on 4.5 mm gun !! lol, i prefer playing bf 1942...

see you soon !!
