The strongest living land creatures on Earth

Post by [JiF]Riceman »

Thought this was interesting....

The strongest living land creatures on Earth, measured by their power to weight ratio...

1. The oribatid mite

The strongest land creature on Earth (measured by power-to-weight ratio) is the oribatid mite, a group of tiny soil-dwelling things which can be found in their hundreds of thousands in your average square metre of dirt. It can resist a pull of 1,180 times its own weight - which is similar to a human pulling 82 tons.

2. The dung beetle

It can lift the equivalent of a man pulling six double decker buses: 1,141 times its own body weight. Dung beetles vary greatly in size, measuring between 1mm and 6cm in length. It is a scarab, a type which comprises 10 per cent of all beetles. It was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, who believed that its rolled balls of dung echoed the movements of the sun and represented transformation and renewal. (The rhinoceros beetle is also very strong but this list isn't big enough for the two of them).

3. The leafcutter ant

Its jaws vibrate to cut off comparatively huge pieces of foliage, which can weigh 50 times their meagre bodyweight; the equivalent of a human lifting two and a half tons. It forms societies that are among the most complex in the animal world, which can comprise 8 million ants, with different functions attached to different groups. They "farm" a fungus which grows on the leaves.

4. The gorilla

It can lift 10 times its bodyweight: two tons. Males can reach 1.75m tall and weigh 200kg. Females are around half that size. They can live to be over 50 years old. The name "gorilla" is derived from the Greek word "gorillai", which refers to "a tribe of hairy women". Like humans, gorillas have individual fingerprints.

5. The African crowned eagle

The first - and only - bird on the strongest animal list. During flight, it can lift carrion up to 16kg - four times its weight. It is a powerful and aggressive hunter and kills monkeys and even small antelope. It is up to 95 long with a wingspan of about 2m. It can spend five months building its huge nest, which is over 2m wide by 3m deep, but only breeds every two years.

6. Humans

We only reach this level thanks to Zydrunas Savickas, the world's strongest man, who can lift over twice his weight. Savickas, or rather Mister Savickas, is a 34-year-old Lithuanian who is 1.9m tall (6ft 3ins) and can bench press 285kg and "deadlift" (with arms straight down, moving from crouch to standing position) 407kg. The average man can "bench" about 65kg and deadlift about 90kg: so our Lithuanian is about five times stronger than the man on the street.

7. Tigers

They can carry double their bodyweight at about 540kg. They measure up to 3.3 from nose to tail and weigh close to 300kg and, despite their size, run at up to 40mph. A swipe of a tiger's paw is powerful enough to smash a cow's skull. There are nine tiger subspecies; three of which are extinct while the other six are endangered due to hunting and the destruction of their habitats. A group of tigers is called a "streak" or an "ambush". A liger is a cross between a male lion and a tigress, while a tigon is the mix resulting from a lioness and a male tiger mating.

8. Elephants

They can carry a vast weight but are very heavy. They can pull up to 9 tons - 1.7 times their normal bodyweight. They are the largest land animals and live up to 70 years. The largest elephant on record was 4.2m tall, a full metre bigger than the average. At birth, they weigh 120kg (which is a 260-pound baby)

9. Oxen

The ox can carry one and a half times its weight, or 900kg. Oxen are usually castrated male cattle, used across much of the world for ploughing and transport. They are generally paired for work and, traditionally, were given names starting with the same letter or in an associated phrase, with one having a longer name. For example, Quick and Nimble or Turk and Tiger

10. Grizzly bears

A grizzly bear grows from 0.5kg at brith to around 550kg as a mature adult. Standing on their hind legs, they are about 2.5m tall. They can run at 34mph but go faster uphill than down because of the distribution of their muscle. They can live to 30 years old in the wild

Obviously Grizzly bears are the most bad ass. I would never mess with a grizzly. Not even on a good day.

What about an eagle that hunts monkeys and small antelopes?
