Windows 7 & Online Player Mode
Okay,
So I finally have a new computer, running a 2.2Ghz Athlon, with 2GB's of Ram. I have onboard Geforce6 video at 128mb. Not bad really. However I am running Windows 7,
So I had to buy a brand new copy of Battlefield 1942 in order to play (lost the primary disc somehow), and after downloading the update 1.69, and installing both that and the 1.69b file, I thought I'd be good to go.
Well I can play, but the sights on my gun aren't there. I can't see certain buttons to click so I can select say mini-maps on, or language change, and even adding my own name was a lesson in blindness.
Lastly, when I did get my name right, so I wouldn't get kicked using "player" it keeps bombing on me. I just don't know what to do, short of getting another hard drive and installing Windows XP on it.
Is anyone having any issues with running Windows7 and getting onto the JiF server? If you did, how did you resolve it?

Re: Windows 7 & Online Player Mode
I have heard of this happening to others also, but have not heard of a remedy for it. When I use to have Vista mine was the same way so it is a compatabilty issue with windows 7 for sure. If you decide to get a copy of XP here is a link to a good site that sells it for $50 bucks ( US ) http://halfpricesoftwares.com/index.php ... 4a2f0d5792

Nope ,
my BF runs on 7 as well , but i have only connection troubles sometimes. thought it was PB trouble but
also in single player mode he sometimes stopped.
Dont think there is a solution at the moment for compatabilty issues with windows 7, so i reconnect each time ;-(

Re: Windows 7 & Online Player Mode
This happened to me on Vista as well. After I updated the video card, it seemed to work just like normal (i.e. CTD every once in awhile, but at least the graphics worked).
I'd recommend updating the card and see if that helps any.

Re: Windows 7 & Online Player Mode
Thanks for the Help Gnome.
I am downloading Windows XP now. Okay, it's done. Just have to install it.
I happen to have the best Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate. So I shouldn't have a problem from here on out.

I have a good copy of Windows XP Pro. I would just need to outlay for a new hard drive. This one runs good with Windows7 and I don't own the copy of 7, so I wouldn't want to blank it out just to try.
If I upgrade the video, I have to get a new PSU. Just no getting around a 250Watt PSU, and trying to add a PCIx board. They just don't run on love.
As far as getting a different copy of Windows 7, I have Ultimate 7 64.

Re: Windows 7 & Online Player Mode
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. and yes I've had serious issues with some games. BF1942 w/ punkbuster enabled will only play in XP SP3 compatibility mode and only if I run it as an administrator. However to play FH (a BF1942 mod) I have to run the program as an administrator, set it to Windows 98/Me mode and disable visual themes and disable desktop composition. Then I also had to disable lightmaps in the video settings in game to keep it from crashing on map load. Make sense out of that?
OH yeah, I also had to set the compatibility of PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe (found in: C:\Windows\sysWOW64\) to run as administrators and to run in Windows 98/Me mode.
Summary:
For BF1942
1) Run as Administrator
2) Compatibility mode: Windows XP SP3
3) Set PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe to Run as Administrator and to Windows 98/Me compatibility mode.
For Forgotten Hop v 0.7
1) Run as Administrator
2) Compatibility mode: Windows 98/Me
3) Disable visual themes
4) Disable desktop composition
5) In the game turn off 'Lightmaps'
6) set PnkBstrA.exe and PnkBstrB.exe to Run as Administrator and to Windows 98/Me compatibility mode.

Re: Windows 7 & Online Player Mode
Thanks for the info Badger. Once I figure all that out, I should be golden.
I did have to update my video drivers. I was so messed up before, in that I couldn't change any of the values in-game, or properly set things like color or change my name from Player to Warhawk. I was less than amused with that.
At least seeing this, tells me I don't have to buy into a video card upgrade. I really thought 128mb of onboard video would be sufficient for this game. Oh for the days of WinXP. I think my main idea, will be to get a 2nd SATA HDD, and just load XP onto it, and until I need to, upgrade to Windows7. I'd flash this drive, but I didn't have to pay for the OS that it came with. Since it's Ultimate-=64, no sense in losing it.
