Online problems
Hey gents,
As I mentioned previouslyI now have access to a new computer (for a month or so) and it runs BC42 (most of the time!) so i am able to edit maps etc.. again.
However I have loaded '42 onto it and whilst the install went fine and I can play both SP and local games, whenever I try to go online it CTDs just before it finishes loading (I get the stupid Error reporting box but it is useless as it offers no help or advice) This happens no matter what the server I try to join. I am going to try reloading the patches again but apart from that I'm stumped
System is:
Pentium 4
some ATI graphics card
Win XP SP2
Any help or advice would be appreciated, I know you are missing me sniping from afar
Cheers
ZtF

Re: Online problems
OK, maybe NIC (network card) drivers?
Or maybe a conflict with Video and NIC?

Re: Online problems
I'm thinking it might be the firewall, but I cannot access the settings on this comp

Re: Online problems
It must be the firewall Zouga, I'm sure you know this but hit Ctrl, Alt, Delete when the blank screen comes up. It should go to the desktop and you will most likely see a box asking " This program is trying to access the the internet blah blah blah. Is it ok - Yes or No. "

So you've not got the admin rights on your account?[JiF]zougathefist wrote:I'm thinking it might be the firewall, but I cannot access the settings on this comp
I think I had that when I set up my new laptop & didn't set firewall to allow BF through.

Re: Online problems
I set my Firewall to 'Game Mode' so it does not ask for permissions during a game, but it still just CTDs and I get the BF1942 has encountered an error and has to close... nonsense
meaning what? and how do i resolve it?OK, maybe NIC (network card) drivers?
Or maybe a conflict with Video and NIC?

Make sure your NIC drivers are current.
If they are PCI cards, try in a different slot.
Re-seat cards and memory. I had to re-seat my vid card (AGP) one time to stop a similar issue.
Instead of putting your firewall in "Game Mode", first test with it completely off

Re: Online problems
I had a similar problem with F-Secure security package. PunkBuster related. I had to put the virus services in manual and reboot to play.
No matter how I set up the virus/firewall protection I could not get it to work. I tried reinstalling F-Secure, no good. I tried cleaning everything I could find from the PC relating to F-Secure including the registry and reinstalling and it still did not work. Reinstalled the PB stuff numerous times, still did not work.
Others have had the same problem yet others have the same virus software yet no problem.
Reinstalled BF, no good. Problem was the same for all games that used PB.
I gave up and installed different virus software and the problem went away.
It probably would have worked if I was willing to reinstall the OS from scratch, but at the time I was not.

Re: Online problems
this is a Zone Alam Firewall, its a corporate edition that we use at work and is super strict and you cannot mess with the settings, but who cares it ain't my machine so if it gets a virus thats just too bad....

Did you make sure to check the punkbuster box?
