I went there back in 1995. I still get chills looking at the pics.

I can only imagine the sense one might get actually being there, but your photos speak of the eerie nature that surely surrounds that place.

I do not think it matters which camp you visit - they all bring up such strong reactions. Just to walk into one and then look back and be thankfull that the gate is still open so you can get back out. Think what it must have been like to look back and realize there was no way out.

Re: Auschwitz and Birkenau
I've been to one of those camps with my school class once. It was kind of strange when you've only seen black/white pictures of it before, it seems to be so dead and far away. But when you actually stand there - it was in spring, all the birds singing and the fresh grass peeking out among the barracks -it all feels like a real tasteless joke. And it's not a joke of course, it really happened. The camps that still exist today do an important job to make us remember that. Good thing you brought this up, major.

I recently saw Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Though it's fiction, it was really powerful. And it was told differently from most other stories I've seen about then. It was one of those movies that I kept thinking about for days afterwards. Highly recommend you all check it out.
