New PC

I have built a lot of PCs over the years, but this is the first time I found something that won't fit in a mid tower case
Mine is gonna kick your PCs butt. If I ever get it running Well maybe not my video card.

May want to change the heatsink. The stock ones are okay, but Intel doesn't put a lot into them you could get something like this...which looks way cooler!

Ya, I have been thinking about just changing the CPU cooler. Probably easier and I won't have to have a giant case.

All the parts I ordered for the new PC I received by last Friday.
All excited I started to put it all together. Then OH NO!
The heatsink that comes with the Extreme Intel processor is huge. I mean HUGE!
I had decided not to get a case until I could actually see one I liked. I have a standard mid tower that I tried to use.
The heatsink will not clear the power supply. The heatsink extends about an inch (give or take) above the motherboard.
Anyone know of a case where there is room between the motherboard and the power supply? One that is not too expensive.
I guess I could change the heatsink, but it is not only huge is it kinda cool

Is that a stock cooler in your case or are you happy to TK me?

LOL, it is the stock cooler with the Intel Extreme.
I can't imagine what happens when it gets hot, but that is a topic for a different website.

That stock cooler is designed after the ones that Thermaltake has. I have a couple of the golden orbs from TT and they work great and the Intel looks close to them.

These are for AMD but they have some for Intel also but you will see where the stock cooler is designed after the TT orb series. The main difference is the orb series will fit in most cases.

I just want to know... when you turn it on does it create a void/wormhole like the one in Stargate SG-1? Have you tried dialing P378 yet?


P.S. If I have something actually useful to add to this thread well ... I'd be as surprised as anyone.

I stuck the board in a mid tower with the power supply just laying in so I could install Windows 7 64 bit and see how the system runs.
It works The mother of all fan cpu coolers runs very quiet and the fan turns pretty slow.
Without messing with anything it gets a Windows 7 score of 4.9 over all. I have not checked drivers or anything yet. Just ran the install and some Windows updates.

Windows 7 64 performance ratings
Processor: 7.3
Memory: 7.3
Graphics (Aero): 5.9
Gaming graphics: 4.9
Primary hard disk: 5.5

Not sure how that compares, but the processor and memory rock as the rating range is 1.0 to 7.9

I went to Micro Center and found a case that works. I did not want to get one online as I really needed to see if stuff would fit.
It's a little large, but it will do. Still it is a mid tower.
It is a Thermaltake VK9000 Series Element T. It has plenty of room at the top for the cpu cooler.
After rebate it will be about $50 US.
I don't really need the lighted stuff, but it's there It has great airflow and I have not even felt anything warm in the case yet.
The Intel CPU seems to be running around 29 C. Not that I have even taxed it yet.

As for Windows 7 64. What can I say it's windows Seems to run, but I never ventured passed XP and can't find anything but useless eye candy in it.

Yeah Grimp, that's an ongoing trend, the roomy well vented case are all filled with colored LEDs nowadays. Even my Rosewill PSU came with a blue LED in the fan hub.
