Custom-Map Download Trouble

Post by Rippchen mit Kraut »

Hey there,

I tried to download your custom map packs, but none of them worked. The big 560MB pack is downloaded, but afterwards i get a message that the source file can't be read and the file hasn't been saved.
When I download the small 389MB .exe-file, I can open the file, but i get a message that he couldn't create the "Mod"-folder. I also downloaded the .zip-file, but it's not possible to unzip it.
I'm quite messed up now.

Could anybody come up with a solution? (I have version 1.61b, OS Vista32)

Rippchen

Download the .exe file & not the zipped file. Other people seem to have had problems with that one recently.
I used the .exe on my new Windows 7 machine recently & it worked OK, so fingers crossed.

Gav,

first of all - thanks for your reply!
But as i wrote, I downloaded already the .exe-file. It works fine (message: "Thanks for plaing at JifF's" and so on; then select the installation folder).
But then I receive an error message which says that the output file couldn't be created. Do you have a solution for that?

Sorry about not reading your post really well.
I am wondering if it is some kind of administrator privilege thing.
That is one of the things I have encountered whilst trying to unload files & programs on this new machine. It blocks things from writing some stuff due to wanting admin rights (which I have already).
It may be a bit of a pain but try creating a folder called mod on your c: drive & unpack the files 1st. Then try moving them across to the corresponding directories with the old fashioned copy & paste.

Rippen,

what are you running on your computer?
Vista, 7 or XP?
what program did you use to extract the Zipped files?
I believe that you need to use WinZip - others like 7zip, WinRAR will not work (you can get trials for WinZip for free - do not pay for it!)
when you click the link always choose save as opposed to run and save it to your desktop. If all this does not work then PM me an email address and I will send the files to you on Friday as attachments compressed with WinRAR (get this here)

Gav, you're a real genius! ;) That "C:\Mods"-thing worked, at least to unzip and copy it... Thanks for that!!
Whether or not the maps are going to run , i'll see on monday.

Zouga, thank you too for the email-offer. And by the way - as I already wrote in my first post :-P - I'm using Vista 32bit.

Just another question about the mappack (and then I'm done, promised):

The pre-installed maps, e.g. el alamein a.s.o., consist of three files (ea, ea000, ea003), whilst the new ones only are one file.
Is this because of the fact that the "normal" maps are also playable in COOP and CTF or did something go wrong?

Hi Rip,

If you want to test the maps, on the BF menu screen go to Multiplayer > Create Game > Select the Maps and move them across with the arrow keys > Start Local. This effectively makes your comp a server hosting the map and allows you to test Conquest maps alone

The suffix _001, _002 etc.. at the end of a map denote a modification (mod) to the original.

So if I wanted to put some more AA guns onto Kursk, rather than making a new version of the map, I could just make a copy of it and put the AA guns onto it with Battlecraft42. I then call it Kursk_001.rfa, so when BF42 loads the Kursk map, it will load the original then _001 then _002 etc...
The reason you have lots of different versions in your maps folder is because they were created by EA to fix various glitches in the originals and were released in the patches you need to D/L and install to keep up to date (Ver 1.61b), rather than have people go messing around in the file folders and replacing/deleting the old versions, they do it this way so that the _001 version overwrites the original each time you load, but the original stays.

On a side note (in case you were wondering) this is how server side modding works, so you can join a server where they have an extensively modded map (Jets in BoB or no tanks in Berlin) without needing a copy of that map in your folder. Instead the server has a Berlin_001.rfa loaded onto it and that overrides the version of the map you have on your computer.

It is important that you do not delete or remove these otherwise your game will not load or play properly
