New PC

Well my cute little cube PC died. It is either the motherboard or the processor and because my wife made me trash all my old PC parts and crap I don't have replacements for either to try.
So I am not going to try and fix it.
I wanted to buy an IMac, but they are just too expensive for me.

I guess I am going to have to build a new PC. First time in years I don't really want to to this. I must be getting really old.
I have been out of the PC hardware loop for sometime and if someone would review my choices it would be great.
I only can spend around $500 US.

I have the processor, yeah! Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 (kick ass I guess)
Keeping my video card Radeon X850XT for now.
Already have a sata drive I bought last year.

Oh I have an old printer that will be useless now, but we got a freebee last year with a purchase at BestBuy and it does have Windows 7 64 drivers

Anyway your input would be very helpful in case I am buying something that is dumb.

Well to start with the memory is for the P55 chipset and your going to be using the P45 chipset.

This memory here should work with no probs on that board.

As for the power supply I would not use it. The PSU's in those cases are just a cheap one and I wouldn't trust with this setup your going to build.

I would look at either going with a Thermaltake or Enermax PSU in 600W and up range.

Other then what I showed here the rest looks good to me. The links I posted are just my suggestion of what I would go with and the GSkill memory is good mem and I have some in 2 different desktops that I have running. But if anything I would make sure you change out the PSU cause the one that comes in the case I would not trust.

Specs say I can raise the memory voltage, but I guess I better just order the other and RMA the OCZ.

No problem. A lot of time there is just a module difference on the memory that is different but they would look the same. I do know Intel is picky with voltages unlike AMD and it can make all the difference in the world of if it works or not on the base side but you can OC it and be fine.

When you get it built your going to have a rig there and if you get a new vid card in the next few months you'll have a killer system that should last for a while before you would have to upgrade.

Any way I can RMA it and I put in a new order for the right stuff. Maybe if my wife does not catch on I can not RMA, but swap it and have 8 GIG
I ordered some modular power supply from TigerDirect and Windows 7. The name of the power supply escapes me.
600W dual rail and a bunch of other nonsense I don't have time to figure out Seems like it has all the right plugs and had good reviews for a mid to low price supply.
I did not order a case. I will use some old one I have laying around for now.
I find it hard to buy cases without actually seeing them

Here is a pretty good (although LONG) article on building a balanced gaming PC. They pair CPU's and GPU's and you can get the best combo of the two for a specific game.

Some issues, not many for me. The biggest thing was getting used to the cartoony grafix. Once you play for a while they look fine. It does take some getting used to.

All the parts I ordered for the new PC I received by last Friday.
All excited I started to put it all together. Then OH NO!
The heatsink that comes with the Extreme Intel processor is huge. I mean HUGE!
I had decided not to get a case until I could actually see one I liked. I have a standard mid tower that I tried to use.
The heatsink will not clear the power supply. The heatsink extends about an inch (give or take) above the motherboard.
Anyone know of a case where there is room between the motherboard and the power supply? One that is not too expensive.
I guess I could change the heatsink, but it is not only huge is it kinda cool

Probably the only way you can go to have enuf room will be with a full tower. I never buy anything but full towers and the only mid towers I have around here are ones that are sent to me for review and I give most of them away in contest.

Not sure of your price range but here is a mid-tower that might work as the PSU goes at the bottom. Might have to find someone that has one and see if there would be enuf room.

This case is almost identical to the one i bought and it has a lot of room.
Just be careful,everything on the second one is snap on plastic.
I didn't break anything so that's not too bad. lol

Thanks. I need about an inch to inch and 1/2 between the top of the motherboard and the power supply.
At least one of those full towers looks like it has inches. Hard to tell on some of them.
The one with the power supply on the bottom does not look like I could clear the top of the case.

My first build was tough.
I didn't know anything about the room i needed.
My friend told me that a mid tower would work on just about anything, unless i was going to make uber gaming machine with water cooling. lol
