I have a defunct Laptop that needs the motherboard replacing
I know that most people consider it not worth it but the laptop is only 18months old and will cost me nothing
so what I want to know is
~ approx how much should a new motherboard be
and
~ how challenging is it to replace in a laptop assuming that I have a skill rating of 5 on a scale of 1-10
laptop is a Toshiba Equium A100 147

Re: laptop repair
Well with it being a Toshiba I would have to guess at around $200-$250 for a mobo. You might be able to check some of the parts warehouses and find a good used for around a $100 or so. I have a Toshiba that needs a new mobo and its $500 for it but the laptop is worth it cause it was $3999 new. If you have never changed out a mobo in a laptop before you will find it a challenge to do. I have done many of them but Toshiba is the worst cause they all kinds of screws that's not really needed.
If you do it yourself I would suggest to take pics as you go so you will know how everything goes because you will literally have to tear the whole thing apart. The only thing that will be in one piece is the the screen cause for it all you will have to do is remove the hinges and place it off the side.

Re: laptop repair
Cheers Lone,
I got a quote for £100 to fix it but shipping will be about £30 too
Think I can get a board for £65 used which is about $100 so I may give it a go, if it fails I could sell the parts for scrap too

Re: laptop repair
Sounds like a good deal on it. A lot of the time its cheaper to fix them then to replace them but it all depends on the laptop. To replace mine with the equivalent of what I have is around $3400 so I think I'll fix mine when I get the money.
My laptop still works which is what I'm on right now but my DVD burner wont work. I bought a new one hoping that it went out but something on my mobo went bad and it wont read anything coming from the DVD. I tried it in a friends and it works fine so its my mobo. I have an external DVD burner I use but it gets to be a pain to dig it out and hook it up every time I need to install something or burn something.
