I've heard of him, but never had the opportunity to get his at the library.
Another amazing Sci-Fi writer is of course, Heinlein. His later books get....weird and kinda esoteric, but all still have a really solid story. Good starting spots are Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, Glory Road, Double Star, and The Door Into Summer.
For those of you who like a mix of fantasy with sci-fi, Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern series is quite amazing. It starts out with a fantasy setting but quickly techs up. Easily one of my favorite series, just after Dune

I am just about to re-read another great WW2 book - "A Time for trumpets - The untold story of the batlle of the bulge". This is a great book telling the Battle of the Bulge story by someone who was actually there - Charles B McDonald a US company commander. When I read this book the first time I could not put it down.
