Post by [JiF]Sgt Shellshocked »

I was talking to Gib and Harrick on TS about WW 2 Strategy games. Here are a couple good free demos from battlefront.com ...

Combat Mission Barbarossa to Berlin - Demo
Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord Demo (v1.02)

There are also a lot more demos on the site.

I've played these and they are fun. There is also a North African module called Afrika Korps. It uses something they call I-go-We-go, in that you and your opponent (human or AI) both input your moves, and then the game plays it out for 60 seconds while you both watch while your men and tanks try to carry out their orders. You can rerun the 60 seconds from all different angles. It's kind of like watching your own war movie.

It is also very easy to set up play by e-mail.

Here's another one called Conquest of the Aegean, which has a unique way if viewing units and giving them orders. There are no hexes. Look at the image gallery and click on some of the screens. There is another game in this series about Operation Market Garden.

I used to play "Company of Heroes" a lot. It's a pretty fast and intense real time strategy game. The focus is on the fight itself, resources and reinforcements are gained by capturing strategic points on the map and also building your base is rather simple. The fight system includes a lot of features like cover (squads will look for nearby cover when under attack) and fortification (u can even build sandbags, barbed wire and tank traps), suppressive fire as well as the capture and fortification of buildings. Nearly everything on the map can be destroyed, so be careful not to blow up your own cover! While infantry combat is already great you have a wide range of supporting units and abilities including tanks, APCs and also artillery or airstrikes. The graphics pretty much blew me away the first time I saw it. (Little hint: try to zoom in with the camera...) And unfortunately that is the problem behind this game: It eats hardware for breakfast... :/
But for those who like this kind of game and got some horsepowers in their machine will have a blast playing it, I promise! :viva:

demo version: http://download.chip.eu/en/Company-of-H ... 65635.html (should be the one in english)

But don't blame me if it blows up your computer!
