Are A levels getting easier?

Post by seadogs »

Today, AS and A Levels were announced, Now I was one of these candidates expecting results and am pleased with what i got:

Computing: a
Maths: d
General: c
German: c

Now, I have what I class 'hard subjects', subjects that you cant cram for, but I suppose everyone says that. What do ya reckon, are exams getting easier, especially with the introduction of health and social care/media studies/PE/Sports leaders?

and should 'easy' subjects be treated the same as 'hard traditional' subjects?

I wouldn't necessariliy say they were easier but when I did my a-levels there was not enough time in the week to study more than three subjects, occasionally you would get the odd swot doing 4, but they generally stayed later in the day and gave up some of their free periods to do so.
however some of the subjects that you can now study are pretty useless, (without wanting to sound old) in my time we used common sense and did not need to be told about citzenship or other soft subjects.
I dont believe the issue is with the teachers or students but more with (straying onto contentious ground here) the ridiculous league tables and 'scoring' system introduced by HMG (end of the foray into politics)

that said - well done Mr seadogs, if I'd had a comp and BF42 when I was doing my A-Levels I dare say I would be sweeping the streets by now

yes i agree with you there. Each subject does need a fair amount of work, but some more than others. General studies for example, you turn up and that is weighted equally as say an a level in physics, which is one of the hardest a levels to get I think, that along with languages, maths and other sciences.

I was a 3D scholar.
When I should have been revising I was sunbathing in the back garden.
So I ended up with 3 D grades in Economics, History & French :(
We had a lot of people who did 4 A-levels, as I was at a school for swots (here in Buckinghamshire we still have a selective education policy where at the age of 11 you sit an aptitude test & the top chaps & chapesses go to a Grammar School)

Congrats on your achievements seadogs!
What are your plans next?

Well done Sea Dogs, especially on the A in computing, and you got a place as well. I hear there is a bit of competition for places.

Like you I got a C in General Studies and also
C Chemistry
C Physics
E Maths :( ( Which mean't I had to take a thicko refresher Maths course at Uni)

But more importantly how did you do in the BF1942 exam. Let's look at your report:-

Sgt hUTCHIE says:- "SeaDogs aka Dim-Dom : C+ Has some talent and tactics, but needs to move around more, particularly when shooting. Have caught him lying down on the job and tying his shoe laces at times. Dancing lessons would help and also impress the chavettes at the Saturday night Chester bop"
