FTP server

Post by [JiF][AARP]Grimp »

I am replacing our outdated Sparc 10 public FTP server running Solaris 7 and the stock FTP daemon.
We got a new okay Dell workgroup Intel server to replace it.
I have been trying different FTP server software and was wondering if anyone has a suggestion.
So far I have installed Pro FTPD and some other FTP server (forgot which one) on Ubunto. Pro FTPD is good but pretty complicated.
I tried one of the web front ends for Pro and it was so so.
I was hoping to find something that a non UNIX person could manage relatively easily.
I am currently running a demo of WS_FTP Server. Seems a little strange, but that maybe because its all windows and has hidden magic.
Sorta gives me the feeling that I maybe in control, but only because I don't see the big hole in the back of my pants;)
Anyone running anything cool and easy to manage?
Anyone ever used WS_FTP Server?

Don't need client software, just server software.
For Step - thats the magic thingy out on the Internet that has the files you use your WS_FTP client to go get ;)

I use ProFTPD. I know it can be a little complicated to get up and running, but if you can get it setup right you will be very happy with it. I use Webmin as the front end to my entire linux distro when I want to do something quick. Seems to work very well with the ProFTPD and made configuration easier. Only problem with Webmin is it's a security risk, so I only turn it on when needed.

I don't recommend FTP server software anymore because I don't recommend FTP. Does the server need to be publicly accessible and allow anonymous access? If the answer is no to either I would recommend a simple Linux box with OpenSSH and use Secure Copy (SCP). There is an excellent SCP client out there called WinSCP. All you have to do is create an account for the users and they can easily connect through an encrypted connection. As you can see this could become cumbersome if you needed to create a boatload of users. In that case, I'd stick with ProFTPd.
