bah humbug
I know there are a lot of police and/or firefighters in JiF, so no offense intended. Every few months I get calls for donations to various law enforecement charities or funds, "Firefighters of Kentucky, Firefighter Widow's of Kentucky, Sheriff Deputy's Association of Kentucky, Sheriff Deputy's Widow's Cousin's Dog Association, etc... And these guys do not give up until you answer the phone (I can tell by my caller ID log). In the past I've always donated (probably why I get the calls every couple of months), don't think I've ever said "no" before to any of them. But yesterday I wasn't in the best of moods, was eating dinner, and got the call...
The guy says would you like to be a Gold donor for $50, I replied it's not a good time right, then it was how about a Silver donor for $40, "Not a good time", how about a bronze for $20, "not a good time, I've got to be going", how about 10 bucks.... The guy would not take no for an answer, so with a quick, "Have a good evening", I hung up.
Tonight, got another call from a different association. And it was nearly the same thing, except the guys like, "we can send you out the material, and for the price of some chicken nuggets and a drink you could donate..." "sorry, it's not a good time," Then he starts in with a lecture of, "what's wrong with the world is there's just not enough giving, blah blah blah" and he hangs up on me. How the F@#$ does he know how much I give or what I do to lecture me and then just hang up on me.
Rant over, I have a hankering for some chicken nuggets and a drink...

We get that call only like once a year, for the police deptartment. We donate so we can be put on the "one extra warning before a ticket" list. Rofl, I would have spouted off that you pay enough to charity and if you payed anymore your family wouls suffer a meal, guilt trip him into not being an @$$.

I don't give to any charities that call unless I know who they really are. Some are scams and some give pennies on the dollar to the charity. They are professional fund raisers. I don't feel guilty at all. The call goes like this:
Hello.
This is Bill representing something or other
Sorry, I can't help you now.
Click
I can usually hear them talking while I hang up. I don't feel any guilt and I certainly don' t feel the need to justify anything to someone I don't even know. Don't give them the opportunity.

I only give to one charity and that is the "Shop with a Cop" program. My dad is in charge of it in our area and 100% of the money goes to the kids. Lat year they had 189 kids that went shopping and they got to spend $250 each for new clothes and 1 toy.
I always get calls from several others and I just tell them I give to the best charity in the world and when they which one that is I tell them "Me" and thats usually the end of it.

I think Tiss had the best summary. The vast majority of these are professional fundraisers.
And just to clarify - if you do donate and they send you a sticker or something to put on your car...it doesn't work. I know if most guys see a "chiefs of police association" sticker or similar - automatic ticket.
If you really want to do some good, call your local Public Safety agency and ask where to send the check. 100% will go to your local department.

normally I get some redneck guy calling from Alabamba, say he knows my father, and that he told him to put me on their call list.
then they want 5000 bucks.
I then proceed to tell them that "I'm sorry, but this is a nursing home. You'll have to call me back later because the phone scared me and i think I'm having a heart attack"
It's evil I know.
