What you see is NOT what you get - proven!

Post by [JiF]Uncle Stinky »

There's been some discussion here on the disconnect between what you see happening on your computer screen and what is really happening in-game. I got to test that the other night.

I was playing on Stalingrad, and had climbed up on a ledge on the building to the left front of the Soviet side (the ladder is at the back of the building). I was prone, and a German was coming toward me down below.

What I saw: as I started to unload on him, the German, in one motion, dropped prone and killed me with his first shot. It all took 1-2 seconds.

I was on Teamspeak at the time, and asked the guy who killed me how he had done that. It turned out he had used a full clip to kill me. He was probably shooting at me before I even opened up, but I did not see it.

Moral of the story: don't be too quick to cry "hack!" when you see other players doing what seem to be incredible feats. You might not be seeing what is really going on.

Now, if I could just figure out how to lessen the gap between perception and reality. Is it a bandwidth issue? I've got a pretty fast cable connection, but it does clog up now and then.

I've always suspected that this was what was happening & why I couldn't kill people as easily as I was getting shot
That's my excuse & I'm sticking to it.
I guess it is one of the draw backs of playing with a higher ping & lots of lag. Perhaps It's why I think it takes me a while to warm up. It is actually that as the night goes on, I get a better bandwidth on my broadband.

Karkhov the other night. I'm nearby to hUTCHIE , who is on my side, patrolling in a tank on a quiet flag. Suddenly, his tank just dissappears from the screen and I see an opponent accredited with killing hUTCHIE. Between one and two seconds later I hear a Whoooosh! and an explosion and a smoke trail from a zook.

Scenes as you guys describe them can of course be pretty frustrating. Even if you react as fast as you can, your opponent may already have emptied half a magazine. :? But I've learned that soon, when playing some shooters with my cousin in public on the internet or over hamachi. We had some absolutely strange scenes, including being shot before having seen the other one coming around the corner or even minimap-fails. I'm not surprised about anything since that time - I just have to work on my "lag-estimation" constantly...

Good games anyway

Heh. I had one last night on Dambuster where I switched from the turret to the back seat in a Hanomag. About 2 seconds later, I was shot dead and slightly confused. Then someone reminded me of the lag-space time continuum

After that, everything was all good :)

Darn. This means because I usually have good ping, I am not as good as I think I am

In fact, you never know how good you really are unless everyone on the server has got the same ping or you do it on LAN with friends... ;)

Thank You!!....There have been so many times when I would unload a whole magazine on someone and then he would shoot two shots from his mag and boom I'm dead. So frustrating! But this makes sense because I've read that you have to get use to your own ping because where you see him is not allways where he is in the game (shooting ahead of where he is). This would be why if you play single player its sooo easy to shoot bots because they are exactly where you see them (and of course because they're stupid).

Yeah I agree it is a strange one.

While Ping, lag and the game behaviour isn't everything IMHO it is true it can have a sigificant effect. It can also vary from game to game - though fortunately not by much in my case.

I have been shot dead while I believed I escaped safely round the corner of a building a few times which is frustrating and in the back of the APC while it is fully repaired (Hanomag Lag..).

Bots are not immune from this - how many times have I seen Udo Koch and his mates point a zook in the opposite direction to me then zook me without apparaently firing a shot.

It can work for you as well. On one of my videos coming up I start knifing someone while prone. He notices gets up and runs away then dies of my knife wound and there have been a few players who have pumped a full MG mag into hUTCHIE vapour and then get shot with my pistol. In the Berlin video opening scene Rocket112 gets killed by me in a house and he never got a shot off. I know his reactons are good, but the game just didn't show me as being there till it was too late.

hUTCHIE.
