Re: What's in a players name?
I only knew about Mephistopheles, we read a play by Goethe ("Faust" part I) at school where he appeared. He's normally just called "Mephisto" btw.[JiF]cannedcorn007 wrote:I was bored today and thought i would look up some of the bf42 players names and see what they mean.
But some people really got funny player names. Esspecially in kill messages crazy stuff appears, e.g. "Kyle[Bazooka]Himself"...

No, A war trophy is not an engraved, silver plated award you get for winning a war. We've all heard the philosophers claim that no-one wins a war anyway
According to the Wiki online definition:
WAR TROPHY
In ancient Greece and Rome, military victories were commemorated with a display of captured arms and standards and cultural objects, called war trophies.
In more recent times, it has been common for soldiers to return home with souvenirs and memorabilia, such as enemy weapons, insignia and flags.
I'm very curious to hear certain JiF'ers explanations of how and why their nicknames came about. Especially those related to foodstuffs and animals

OK fair enough, however, I do recall that just lately you have received, from me, a few similarly weighted zooka projectiles up the same place that you were referring to[JiF]55GaLLoNdrUm wrote:WT, I think you know all too well about the meaning of my name...

Mephistopheles
He's the guy who always wishes he had my ping when I kill him.
Mephistopheles 130 ms
hUTCHIE 96 ms (pretty good from UK I think).
As for my name it is a nickname and it just happens I had the Caps lock on when I entered it in to BF 1942.
hUTCHIE.

Re: What's in a players name?
Well, for the longest time, my screennames would be either T'cal or Drander, depending on the situation.
However, back in the summer of 2005, I was working up at the Boy Scout Camp I always work at every summer. I had brought my Xbox for weekend entertainment and happened to have my glasses crushed and unusuable. So, I went for a week pretty much blind. On the weekend, some of the other staff and I were bored, so we pulled out my Xbox and played Battlefront 2 (The star Wars version of Battlefield 2) and I still managed to kick everyone's butt, even though I could barely make out vehicles vs people, let alone the friend from foe....
Ever since then, I became the Blind Trooper

Hehe, I guess they were pretty surprized by your show, Trooper. But hey, isn't that exactly what is said in Star Wars? Don't trust your eyes, trust your feelings. I also used to play Battlefront, but on computer and for a rather short time.Blind Trooper wrote:However, back in the summer of 2005, I was working up at the Boy Scout Camp I always work at every summer. My name is actually taken from SW too (no, not from South Park...). I signed up to a german Star Wars wiki about two years ago and I had to find a nickname. I've chosen the name of a rebel agent called Kyle Katarn, who was a former imperial soldier, because I found his character and his vita pretty interesting. Once I had picked that one I got used to it and also kept it for playing some other games before joining you guys. Well, that's basically why I'm Kyle today.

Re: What's in a players name?
My friend Janet Reno (TX) figured out how to play BF42 online and called me to say how much better than single player mode it was. So he walked me through the getting on line process. I had just watched the local news and the commentary guy at the end had a short comment about all the protests to save Tookie Williams from California carrying out the death penalty on him the next day. He simply said "Tookie goodnight". So when it came to filling in a name, I picked that quote. I used to get banned from servers alot. Then one day I noticed someone said "hurry tookie change your name". I was trying to figure out what he was talking about when up in yellow letters pops "last warning tookie". So while I'm trying to figure out how to type messages I got kicked. I figured out to hit K for messages & went back and explained I never knew to actually read all that stuff written in game. And had a conversation about the merits of the death penalty. Needless to say, that name was permenetly banned from SDF ctf server.
When I joined .::]MW[::. (MostWantedClan), I had to shorten it to 2KEY GOODNITE to fit the tags. I never liked that spelling. Which is one of the reasons I left. Since then I've been experimenting with different names.
"Gin Gin Joe" is a name my wife came up with one night Janet was drinking gin. I like that quote, so I've been smurfing with that.
I've just started with "Alice, Dallas Alice" which comes from Willin by Little Feat.

Re: What's in a players name?
Well let's see, where to start. I have an uncle who liked to nickname family and friends. According to several sources, when I was about 3 years old I was visiting my Grandmother. Apparently it was in the fall and Grandpa was out back burning leaves. I thought this looked like great fun, flames licking the sky and all. So, I proceeded to make my own pile on the side of Granny's house. I then went in and hunted down a pack of matches to start my leaves on fire like Grandpa. As I was attempting to strike matches to start the explosion of red and yellow my Uncle just happened to come by. He walked upon the scene of me squatted down trying to do something. Once he realized what I was doing he promptly removed the matches from my hand and began stating at a very loud decibel that i was trying to catch the house on fire and that I was EVIL. Bam, Evil stuck as my nick name til this very day.
Then, when I began to play 1942 back when it came out I decided to play as EvilPaladin. I used to play a lot of Dungeons and Dragons back when I was younger. A Paladin was a do gooder in that game so I thought it would be a neat twist of that particualr character to call myself evilpaladin. Several years later I decided I wanted something different and hence EvilHoosier was born. Only made sense to me, my nickname was Evil and I am a Hoosier so I just combined the two into EvilHoosier. Now you know the true but boring story of my in game name.

Re: What's in a players name?
According to Wikipedia: Hoosier (pronounced /ˈhuːʒɚ/) is the official demonym for a resident of the U.S. State of Indiana. Although residents of most U.S. states typically adopt a derivative of the state name, e.g., Indianan or Indianian, natives of Indiana prefer to avoid these demonyms. The State of Indiana adopted the nickname "Hoosier State" more than 150 years ago.[1] "Hoosiers" is also the mascot for the Indiana University athletic teams and the title of an award-winning 1986 movie Hoosiers starring Gene Hackman, based on the story of the Milan High School basketball team and its road to winning the state championship. The word Hoosier is sometimes used in the names of Indiana-based businesses. In the Indiana High School Athletic Association, seven active athletic conferences and one disbanded conference have the word Hoosier in their name, the conferences names are Hoosier Athletic, Hoosier Crossroads, Hoosier Heartland, Hoosier Heritage, Hoosier Hills, Mid-Hoosier, and Northeast Hoosier with Northwest Hoosier being the disbanded conference.
