Good teamwork beats l33T players - a true story
Last night, CTF, Wake Island. Myself, FrenchAfroMan, Zouga and EvilHoosier on Axis team together.
Two minutes to go and our team is down 0-1 against a tough crowd including some high calibre players from other clans.
The flags are located at the two furthermost bases from each other on the horse-shoe island.
Although it's heavily guarded, FrenchAfroMan manages to grab the enemy flag but with time running out, and with no transport, there's no chance of evading and outrunning the opposing side all the way back around the island.
So he hits the water running, and makes a swim for it to the opposite side of the island, while under heavy fire from infantry, armour and even fighterplanes bombing him.
The clock's counting down and theres little chance of making it across the bay.
In desperation he calls for a pick up.
Zouga comes swooping down in a two-seater plane at sea level, and plucks French out of the water.
French then bails at low level on our side of the island but at the very furthermost point, still a considerable distance from home base.
Myself and EvilHoosier are at home base trying to fend off infantry and armour that are fast approaching from the opposite direction in a last ditch effort to recover their flag.
With seconds to go, I realize French is not going to make it in time, so leaving Hoosier to defend our base against the interceptors, I grab a jeep and head for French's position at full speed.
Just as I get to him, and he's about to jump in, a desperate enemy pilot tries to ram his plane across our path but it just grazes the jeep and somehow ends up landing in one piece beside us, jamming our jeep between the wing and the fuselage. The pilot jumps out shooting, and I'm thinking we've had it. But at that moment, out of no-where, two friendly infantry appear and gun down the pilot, just as I'm managing to extracate the jeep.
French jumps in and I put the pedal to the metal and head for home, with French still safe and sound.
But we know home base is still under heavy attack so our chances are slim. But as we approach we see EvilHoosier has kept the hordes at bay with his tank and the flag is clear.
Dodging the incoming, we get the jeep back into our base, and with seconds to spare, French brings the enemies flag home.
The game ends moments later at 1-1.
The secret to how we pulled this off?
TeamSpeak.
From the moment French hit the water, we started co-ordinating the whole rescue on TS, from Hoosier keeping our home base clear while the plane and jeep rescue was in progress, to me knowing where French had landed and needed picking up, and keeping each other informed about what the opposition was doing.
Zouga was the only one not on TS, but as an accomplished teamplayer, he showed incredible situational awareness in pulling off the almost impossible sea rescue.
The rest of the guys on our team also showed some great team spirit by keeping our jeep clear, and the home base free of baddies, once they'd digested what was happening.
You should have heard everybody congratulating each other in chat in the moments after we got the flag home! Even the opposing side was impressed.
A great battlefield moment.
Feel free to correct me on finer details and anything I may have missed if you were there.

I had to read that 3 times, it was so compelling.
And each time I was convinced FrenchAfroman wasn't going to make it...

Wow ,
that is an awsome story and so well written!
Now I want to see the movie , you should recreate this story by making it into a BF1942 movie.

Re: Good teamwork beats l33T players - a true story
to fill in on some more detail here,
I had to swoop 3 times to gather French, on the last pass my plane took a direct hit and my energy dropped to 1/2 a bar.
French fell out of the plane and ended up in the drink, so I had to come around again and lift him from the sea.
the emeny had a tank on the scen by now but was trying to kill one of our guys who was covering French.
Just as we made landfall on the southern part of the island, the enemy tank shot the plane out from under us and we had to bail.
I was a sniper (I know!?) so was not much use anymore, but luckily WT shows up in his jeep and the rest is history.
My heart was pounding! we came close to failing about 3 times
madness, but thats why we play

See, this is a thrilling example of why this game is still going on and getting old geezers like me in sweats sometimes !
A perfect show that should have been made in a movie as Shellshocked said. Too bad nobody was running fraps or that there is no Battlerecorder as in 2142.

This heroic event just gets more exciting with each instalment , more details please!!!!
Can someone recreate these scenes with a bit of video majic and make the movie.
What would we call the movie? How about "Requesting A Pickup" can I have a bit part in it as maybe one of those guys shooting at French in the drink and missing, I could do that

Great story indeed, French already told me about it. That's Battlefield CTF at its best, no questions asked. Always awesome to see, and even better to get involved in. And what's the message of it, kids? Always join TeamSpeak while playing...

Re: Good teamwork beats l33T players - a true story
Can I have a part in the film version of the book?
I will play Zouga! I am thinking flying outfit with leather jacket & helmet & some goggles & the white scarf trailing in the wind. Big moustache & stiff upper lip.
This is a great account, thanks for sharing it WT.
CTF is always a heart pounder when you've got that flag & it's the long run home, never quite sure what's coming up behind.

LOL
Man! I've just spent the last 3 months trying to complete the JiF Promo Video 2009 with all the obstacles and headaches that go with it, and now you guys have the next movie script and cast ready for production. I may have to change my name to [JiF]Oliver Stone. xx

I would like a small part in the movie.
You know, the one where you guys open a can of corn rations just before battle.

Re: Good teamwork beats l33T players - a true story
can i make some corrections to the story i was part of????
so thats the way i saw the storie happen . so we are americans we keep on losing the airfield and the japs(no offense) are coming close to our base with tanks, i keep on getting killed so after a while instead of going for the airfield i m like screw this and i drive to the enemy base with my jeep. just before the base i run over 2 guys and as soon as i enter the base everyone is shooting at me so i pull over to the right of the flag jump out jump back in and see that my car has 2 bars left so, i know i m not gonna make it back so i take off over the bridge through the village and all the way to the def gun. Evilhoosier shows up behind me with a jeep but we know we have a tank behind us so i call for a pick up and zouga shows up he flys over twice but is too high so he does it a 3rd time i jump in but in the excitment i forgot to take my finger off the E button the i bail out agin in the middle of the water but close enough to the jap base for the infantry and the tank to shell to water in a 30 yard radius around me, luckily no one gets me, so zouga flys over me again but is too high so he turns around and flys in very low+ he reduces hes speed so much that hes wheels came out. so he finaly picks me up and pulls up straight but since hes plane was flying very slow i m luck oh we are in the water but zouga manages to get us out and flys me to the deff gun on the us side of the island. in the mean time hoosier shoot and naded the tank that was shooting us to create a diversion and so probably saving my life. as soon as we got over to the other side the tank hits us so zouga and i bail out, but there is still a long was to go to the flag and the tank is shelling all around us even snipers shoot came over. so i call for help again and trophy shows up with hes jeep and picks me up drops me off at our flags and we make a point. Plz do not forget that in all that action going on the rest of my team managed to keep the tankies off our flag and shoot many enemys so remember those who have fallen for the team.
Thx to Zouga Evilhoosier trophy and the team.

Going to see Indiana Jones tonight, this story was a good warmup, maybe better than the film, my pulse went up reading and I could even imagine Frenchy calling for backup (scary).

Re: Good teamwork beats l33T players - a true story
Very exciting narrative War Trophy and company!
I remember feeling relieved that French was (in desperation) going the wrong way! Assuming he made it past the bridge and the cluster of huts where the flag is located (in Conquest) there was no way he could make it across the bay in time without drowning or getting shot. Then - if memory serves - he was in the water EAST of our position. But an exploding jeep took me out of commission.
My last hope was to shoot at the jeep after Zouga dropped off French and I vainly took desperation shots with the M3A1. All for naught as French cruised in for the capture.
Great coordination guys.
