Really High Pings last few days
Hi,
I have been getting really high pings for the last 2-3 days 500+ I normally have about 120-130.
I am now getting kicked a lot for such high values. Has anything changed or is it just network traffic from the uk?
Are any other uk players getting higher pings lately? Is there anything I can do?

Re: Really High Pings last few days
During the day here in the U.S. the ping will spike higher.
That means +4 to 6 hours your time.
It usually settles down a little later in the day.
I'm sure Mike will clarify it if i'm wrong about it.
I think it has to do with server traffic and it's usage where it's located.
When i get on here in the evening it does get cranky, then settles down.

Re: Really High Pings last few days
Hi Sgt,
The Potluck and training servers are on different ISPs. The training server is on a much slower connection then the Potluck server, but it doesn't get nearly the use. There may be a routing problem between you and the server if this is happening a lot, especially if it is happening outside normal business hours EST. In such cases there really isn't much, if anything we can do. If it continues to happen, could you post a trace route? That should help us identify if we can do anything or not.

Re: Really High Pings last few days
I'll have a look at what I get tonight.
It does vary when I'm at work depending on the traffic on my network. You can tell when people come back from lunch & start hammering the life out of it with all the facebook stuff they've missed whilst they were away from their desk.
I think usually my ping was in the 120's / 130's at home. So will see if it is still the same later.

Re: Really High Pings last few days
Thanks Mike & Gav for the info.
It seems to have settled down to around 128 now. I will just have to live with the 500+ values if I play at peak times.
I'll take the pain cos it's still the best server to play on

Re: Really High Pings last few days
one thing i would like to say. back then when i started playing i was doing fine on the jif server and then slowly got more lagy every day untill i couldnt play on the jif server anymore. i was laggy on allot of servers but would do fine on european based servers. and then on day bang my computer doent work anymore so i find out its my motherboard, i replace it add some more memory to it and dang again JiF works, and mostly i m the first to be in game when we have a map change, i m in even before the americans.
one thing ive noticed before i repair my computer was that when i would empty the internet explore cookies and offline datas he saved then my computer was doing way better with battle field.

Re: Really High Pings last few days
Hi Gerplaya,
Ping is the amount of time it takes for your computer to communicate with the server, in miliseconds
so a ping of 100 means it takes 0.1 seconds for your comp to tell the server that you have moved your mouse in a particular direction and for the server to tell the display on your computer what it should show as a result of the mouse movement.
Your ping will vary depending on one or more of the following:
The distance you are from the server (N/E USA),
The speed of your internet connection,
The number of players on the server,
The speed of your computer.
Also if there is a player with a high ping (300+) this can create lag for everybody else as the server will devote more resources to the slower connections to average out the experience for all.
Hope this helps.
If you want a translation to German ask Mini Rambo, Lini or FrenchAfroman

Hmm,
Good food for thought FrenchAfroman, I think it wouldn't do any harm for me to cleanup my pc and defrag my disks etc.
Thanks for your feedback.

Re: Really High Pings last few days
I would also suggest going into the start/run menu, type in msconfig and disable most of your start up processes.
This will dedicate more of your PC's resources to gaming and reduce possible lag.

Re: Really High Pings last few days
In the UK cigarettes are also known as Fags
And whilst London is famous for its rhyming slang

There is also a Belfast variant that is slightly more sardonic
hence; Fag Butts = Nuts
