Server Maintenance TODAY -Last update Jan22 1345-

Post by [JiF]Mike »

To address some of the performance problems we've been seeing lately we are gonna change the server to Linux at some point this week. This will cause the server to be down for a number of hours.

More news to come....

I'm testing a linux server. It is a temporary server just being used to test the configuration. Feel free to join it and play, but it may go up and down as I tweak it. I wanna make it a custom maps only server for testing but I'm having trouble with the custom maps.

I had a play on the linux box this lunchtime. All worked well & I didn't get kicked for a high ping which was a novelty for me at work. I did get the odd high ping warning, but usually I rack up 3 quickly & get booted. I know this is due to my end as we are temporarily working on 1 2MB line for the whole company at the minute, but even so the server handled my dodgy connection well.

I am installing the Linux server now and I added another GIG of RAM.
Once it's installed Mike will take over and install BF and stuff.
I am keeping the Windows installed HD just in case things go bad

By all means jump on the test server. It might handle 16 people well enough as it's on a 1.5Mbps line, but then again it might not. :)

Is there a linux version of the client?
Anyone ever tried using "Wine" on linux to run the windows client?

Server is up and running, no password.

The daily CQ to COOP switch may or may not be working, gonna have to give it a few days to work out any kinks.

I'll be keeping a close eye on it.

yes, that map isn't in the xpack1 expansion...I saw it somewhere else so I think it just needs to be changed in the map list.

I can't try it because my BF does not work any more and I don't feel like fixing it. So how does it seem to run? Better? Worse? No difference?

I was on last night for about an hour, it seemed to work good but there was a few comments in game that some people were experiencing lag.

I didn't notice it from my end but my ping was somewhere in the 60's.

So I guess no real difference from my end, even seemed to run well with 32 slots and a fairly full server.
I have decided to produce and sell a strong alcoholic drink called "Responsibly".
That way everyone in the country can get wasted drinking Responsibly.
And all the other drinks makers will be advertising for me on their cans with the slogan "please drink Responsibly".
Probably will annoy the government as well.

During the work day hours here in eastern time the lag could be because of or network link, but only rarely. During off hours there is more than enough bandwidth for the server.
I wonder if some PCs or ISPs people use cannot handle the amount of players. Your PC and link would be required to keep track of more data from the server with more players. The server only uses around 1-3 MEG of our outbound bandwidth and we have 8 MEG. The server itself should be over kill for a BF server when compared to the servers when the game originally came out 500 years ago. I think it is a Intel dual core 3 GHZ with 2 GIGS of RAM. It should be pretty bored :)
How about crashes? Does it seem to crash less?

This is London calling
I played last night from 1.00am GMT for a couple of hours & all seemed to work fine my end.
I'll let you know if I do have any issues, but so far fingers crossed, no crashed maps. Only thing was it wasn't too busy so couldn't quote on lag when it is stuffed full of players.
Maybe when I play tonight could be good test.
Keep you posted.
