Here is a follow-up to the previous post, this is how not to call for Arty.

I select the binocs, but instead of Right Clicking to aim at target I just Left Click to ‘fire’

The line in chat appears, confirming that I called for arty

But as you see from the in-gun view, I have not aimed at the Defgun, but at the floor.

Once again, the camera tracks the shot from the Gun

Through the air…

…to the point of impact (ignore the red arrows, I recycled the image is all)

before switching back to a view of the ‘target’

Whilst this still functions as a method, it is severely flawed;
- The moment the shell lands, the camera will revert to the targeted view so you cannot see either the result or any enemy who may be in the area
- The angle of the view is changed relative to the target - note the difference in the above photos and the one below, which is done correctly

- If the sniper who called for this target does not move and the gunner thinks this is where he wants the shots to land, then he may fall victim to a TK.

Arty is most effective as a Distance weapon
Apart from the Sturmtiger, the BF arty is relatively weak when it comes to armour, a couple of nades or some heavy MG fire and you are toast
therefore you need to move back from the front line to preserve yourself and contribute best to the battle.
a good example of this is Kursk
the arty spawns at the lumbermill on top of the hill, but this is a vulnerable spot as the enemy will come streaming up the hill towards you. Plus given the narrow range of movement of the arty guns you cannot bring fire to bear on the whole battlefield, so you need to get smart
Be a sniper, or have one willing to help, and be an engy. grab the arty when it spawns (Wespe or Katyusha) drive back downhill to your base (if you are sniper do a quick spot towards enemy main before you leave) and park in the trees near the runway or at the very rear of map
Then aim back up the hill, now you can cover the whole battlefield, including both flags and the enemy main.
Plus you are near the APC spawn so you can reload when necessary.
Same with Iwo Jima, if you are in the Battleship you have to move the ship well back from the island, as the shells proscibe an arc and the island is relatively high above sea level.
If you are too close, the shells will hit the ‘sides’ of the island, move back and not only can you cover the whole Island from both gun positions, but you can also hit the airfield because the shells will travel far enough to ‘drop’ over the hills. Plus you are out of range of the enemy defguns and tanks (and this stops the n00bs from running the ship aground)

Your tutorials are really great, Zouga! FrenchAfroman and me were discussing about the arty issue some days ago, now we finally know exactly how to do it.

Thanks a lot for your assist, cu soon on the "battlefield". ;-)

Well, you've again added to my knowledge base. Some of these I didn't know were ''right clickable'' while in the gunner's position !

Now excuse me as my head being too full is about to explode.

That would be a nice pic however: you, laying headless across your desk, the splatter all over the flatscreen where you could still see BF 1942 running.
Guess I'd call it "headshot"...
