How do I toggle art-targets?

Post by [JiF]rix »

When I'm in a defgun/wespe/battleship...(gun that can get targets by snipers), and there are more than one sniper that has given target,
how do I toggle my view between the different targets?

If you right click out of Arty view and then rightclick back in again you will see the next sniper view, Also I believe that rolling the mouse wheel will switch between the alternate views

Ok this is a big one....

I am a terror for calling for arty and get pretty frustrated when people don't oblige.
especially on a map like Omaha or Iwo where the ships can wreak havoc on the land forces, if only one of the usually many snipers would just press 5, aim at the enemy and press fire.
thats all it takes
So I have put this little tutorial together so there are no excuses next time I press F2-F6.

The map is Gothic line and I am shooting at the Axis Base Defgun 1 from the Defgun at the central flag by the bridge 2.
Image

some of the steps are not necessary if you have a spotter but if you intend to use arty, then it is best to be a sniper so you can target while on the way.
If you are in a mobile piece (Sturmtiger, Wespe or Priest) you can have a driver who is a mechanic to fix it, as they take damage whilst firing sometimes.

First thing is to highlight the target -
Press 5 to select the Binoculars
Image

Right Click to aim at the intended Target
Image
Press Fire/Left Click to confirm Target

Then hightail it to an artillery piece
Image

as you can see I do not have a view of the target from my position

Image
Outside

Image
Inside
You can see also that there is a line in the chat that comes up whenever you get into a capable gun if a sniper has called for arty, it tells you who did it and how long you have left

If you call up the map at this stage, you can see a yellow cone that indicates where the sniper has called arty from
Image

If I Right Click
Image
I get the same view as the Sniper saw when he targeted for me

As I said before if you roll the mouse wheel you will shift views between any alternate targets that snipers call up.
The targets only last for 120seconds then need to be renewed. Also if a sniper aims at a new target the arty will lose the old view.

I find it helps to give the gunners a rough idea of where they are shooting, especially if it is a long distance.
for instance on Iwo if you aim at the airfield and call for arty I would say 'Aim at AF' in chat to help the gunner in the ship, then they will know the general direction before they fire. This makes it easier to get rounds on target sooner

When you Fire at the target, The camera will switch to a viewpoint that is high in the air above the point that the sniper was standing when he called for arty
the camera tracks the shot from the gun
Image

through the air
Image

Note the shell just above the right hand hut
Image

until the point of impact
Image

then the view switches back to the target
Image

To Adjust Fire there are three aids to help
Image

They are:
-Two yellow bars on a sliding scale that indicate rotation and elevation 1
-An icon showing the Position of the Gun relative to the target 2
(this is useful if someone gets into the driver seat of a wespe and moves it whilst you are in the sniper view mode. You will see it start to move and can tell them to get out!)
-And finally the Shell itself which is circled 3

The best method is to use the yellow bars,
When you fire a shot , the AI fixes the position of the bars. So when you move the gun's aim, a ghost image of the last position of your shot remains

Image
This first shot was in the middle of the two Pak40s, so I am going to aim for the Left Hand gun first. The two yellow bars indicate where I am aiming

Image
I move the aim down 1 and to the left 2
Note the Icon 3 has moved from the first series of pictures because this is from the German Defgun

Image
as you can see, the shot misses the target and lands to the left

Use the Yellow bars to judge how far to move the gun to hit the target.
These are also helpful on a map like Husky where you have a fixed gun position at the 2nd flag and moving targets around the map.
(assuming you are on the Allies Destroyer)If you get a target for the defgun and hit it, you can ask for a new target, but remember the positions of the yellow indicators. Hammer the ground forces with the arty but keep an eye on the minimap, when the grey dot reappears the defgun has respawned, shift the gun back to the previous position (remember the yellow bars) and you will be able to take out the gun. The sniper cam will follow your shot but it will be difficult to adjust fire accurately from a different viewpoint.

I hope this helps you guys, I will post more on this later about how not to use arty, and what vevicles can be used

I am always willing to use arty on a map, whilst it is not the most exciting part of the game, it is very satisfying to rain down the avenging Fist of Zouga
I remember one round of Iwo where i was switching between the guns on the battleship and the Japs only had the hill base, I had 2 snipers spotting for me, I was hitting 8 shells every 3 seconds onto their position, I racked up about 30 kills in about 2 mins.
so if you ever want a spotter or a gunner then just shout.

thx zuoga, that's a lot of info for me to digest.

Can you practice that in single player mode?
I would love to practice that with someone when there are only two of us in the game and a bunch of bots for targets.
Those def guns are brutal.

Awesome post Zouga! I knew how to spot for artillery, I knew how to switch to the Artillery shot screen, but I did not know how to line up the little yellow ticks for the target...

I will have to practice this.

Thanks 8)

Probably will annoy the government as well.

Very informative and well done Zouga. It allowed me to figure out how to toggle the view between the active spots.

I vote for Zouga as officail BF1942 schoolmaster.

Except for Zooking class...

I think Mini has that one covered.

Master Zouga, your tips plus using the Artillery Training file in practice worked.

Last night on Kharkov, Hutchie had the flag greyed and was hiding out from the mass of Russians searching for him. I spotted the flag with the binoculars, took a wespe and rained chaos and havoc on the flag until all Russians were wiped out. Hutchie was then able to cap the flag. It worked great and was quite satisfying to finally know how to line that thing up with minimal exposure of our team to get a flag.

When doing that, keep your fingers crossed that there are no pilots on the other team as your power trip of raining shell might be a short one !
